Socceroos coach Graham Arnold has turned to Apostolos Giannou as his replacement for Martin Boyle at the Asian Cup.

The Scottish-born winger picked up a knock against Oman and has been ruled out for the tournament with Giannou added to the squad in his place.

Primarily a striker, Arnold will be hoping Giannou can add more firepower to Australia's attack after he bagged his first international goal against Kuwait in October.

The 28 year old has featured just six times for the Socceroos and arrives in the UAE having scored four times this season for Cypriot club AEK Larnaca.

Australia ended their Asian Cup preparations with a 5-0 win over Oman and will begin their title defence against Jordan on January 6.

The Socceroos have had their build-up to the tournament plagued by injury with Boyle joining Aaron Mooy and Daniel Arzani on the sidelines.

Winger Mathew Leckie is also likely to miss the group stages through injury, while Tom Rogic was rested against Oman due to a knee issue.
