Riley McGree's stunning goal leads Newcastle Jets to A-League grand final with victory over Melbourne City

A stunning strike by the young Australian helped earn the Jets a spot in the A-League decider

A Riley McGree wonder goal has helped Newcastle Jets qualify for the A-League grand final with a 2-1 victory over Melbourne City at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday night.

The young midfielder cancelled out Bruno Fornaroli's opener with a scorpion kick lob from outside the area that left City goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis stranded and the pro Newcastle crowd of 19,131 in hysterics.

Former Melbourne City utility Jason Hoffman scored the winner 15 minutes from time, slamming the ball home after a horrible touch from Osama Malik.

Newcastle will now face the winner of Saturday's match between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory in the competition decider, however it didn't look the likely result early in the first half.

Against the run of play, City took the lead through Fornaroli in the 14th minute, with the Uruguayan prodding in Dario Vidosic's cross via a deflection of Nikolai Topor-Stanley.

The away side were unlucky not to get a penalty shortly after their goal, with Daniel Arzani being tripped by John Koutroumbis in the box and referee Shaun Evans deciding no foul occurred even though VAR flagged the incident.
