PSL relegation permutations: Ajax Cape Town, Baroka, SuperSport United and Polokwane City

The 2017/18 Premier Soccer League is coming to an end this weekend, with four of the five bottom teams playing for survival.

Platinum Stars' relegation to the National First Division (NFD) has already been confirmed, but any of the four teams above them could still finish 15th and participate in the play-offs.

As things stand, Ajax Cape Town appear to be in deep trouble, more so because they're facing a Kaizer Chiefs side that's looking to finish the season on a high in their final match.

The Urban Warriors are currently sitting on 31 points, two behind 14th-placed SuperSport United with a goal difference of a minus five (-5). United are on a minus six (-6).

Matsatsantsa take on Baroka, who are on 34 points, and Ajax Cape Town will hope for the Polokwane-based outfit to win or at worst for the match to end in a draw.

However, even then, they would still need to beat Chiefs to ensure their safety as anything less than a win over the Soweto giants will not be enough for Muhsin Ertugral's side to at least avoid the play-offs.

If SuperSport beat Baroka, and Ajax register a win over the embattled Naturena club, then Ertugral's charges will move away from the 15th position and keep their PSL status.

There's also Polokwane City in the mix, and having accumulated just 33 points this season, it could still get ugly for them if they fail to beat Chippa United on the same day.

In the case where SuperSport, Ajax and City all win their respective games, then Baroka will slip to 15th and return for the play-offs for a second successive year.

If Baroka, Ajax and City all win their respective games, then SuperSport will go and try to fight their way back via the relegation/promotion play-offs against both Jomo Cosmos and Black Leopards.

Bernard Molekwa's coached team, Polokwane City, can only slip down to 15th position if they lose to Chippa, and SuperSport as well as Ajax win their respective games.

So, in a nutshell, the pressure is very much on Ajax to pull a miracle in front of their home fans, while hoping for other results to go their way.

And while SuperSport, Polokwane and Baroka would still monitoring the Ajax v Chiefs game in Cape Town, they still need to play their hearts out to avoid any surprises after the final whistle.
