Having come through a play-off against New Zealand to secure their place, the South American side will harbour hopes of making it out of Group C

Being drawn in Group C alongside France, Denmark and Australia offers Peru a realistic shot at the knockout stages.

While Les Blues are expected to top the pile, the other two participants aren't the most daunting opponents by any stretch and while the Danes will be the favourites to qualify alongside their European rivals, it is far from a foregone conclusion in betting terms.

2018 World Cup Qualification

La Blanquirroja achieved a creditable fifth place finish in CONMEBOL qualification, denying the likes of Chile, Paraguay and Ecuador a possible place in Russia.

That wasn't enough for an automatic spot though, but a 2-0 aggregate victory over New Zealand sealed a return to the top table of international football for the nation after 36 years away.

Edison Flores and Paolo Guerrero top scored for their country with five goals apiece.

World Cup History

2018 will be Peru's fifth appearance at the World Cup finals but the first since 1982.

Their best performance came in 1970. That campaign ended in a valiant quarter final defeat to eventual champions Brazil. In total, Peru have won just four of their 15 tournament matches.
