Nyayo Stadium will be ready by December 12, Sports PS Kirimi Kaberia has assured.
Kenya’s second biggest stadium has been under renovation since May 2017. The stadium, together with Kasarani were earmarked to host the 2018 Africa Nations Champions which was later moved to Morocco following the delay in completion of the work.
With the first deadline of August has since elapsed, the government has for the second time set a new deadline, this time, Kirimi emphasizing the project will be ready before the December holidays.
“By next year March, Nyayo will be hosting KPL matches. But the work is expected to end by December because it will host the Jamhuri Day celebrations,” Kirimi, who had an inspection tour of the facility pronounced on Tuesday.
So far, the parking area and the toilets are complete, but the constructors are now putting the final touches on the changing rooms and the water sewer system. The stadium will also have its own borehole.
The contractor is expected to start work on the playing surface in the coming weeks with the project set to end with the covering of the roof (canopy). Once complete, the 30,000 sitter stadium will be an all-seater facility.
VIP and the physically challenged will access the sitting area via the elevator while hooligans will be kept at bay by the tunnel that will run all around the playing pitch.
The seriousness with which the government wants the project completed cannot be overemphasized if the inspection tour conducted by Kirimi on Tuesday is anything to go by. The workaholic PS spent almost two hours inspecting the facilities, moving to the toilet, drainage to the field.
