Nigeria to host 2021 West African Football Union Cup

Nigeria will host the 2021 West African Football Union Cup, according to sponsors, Fox Sports.

In a statement on its website, Fox Sports Africa confirmed that the country will host the third edition of the regional football fiesta in September 2021 on Tuesday.

Before then, the sponsors revealed that the second edition of the biennial tournament will be staged in Senegal in September 2019.

In the inaugural edition, hosts Ghana, emerged champions of the 16-nation event held in September 2017 after the Black Stars defeated Nigeria 4-1 in the final at the Cape Coast Stadium.

Despite their final defeat, the sub-regional tournament proved a great deal for Salisu Yusuf's men as they reached the final of the CHAN 2018 before bowing 4-1 to hosts Morocco. 

Countries expected to participate are Cape Verde, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal and Sierra Leone from WAFU  Zone A. While Benin Republic alongside Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Niger, Togo and Nigeria will take part from Zone B.
