Melbourne Victory have ended their Asian Champions League campaign with a 2-1 win over Shanghai SIPG at AAMI Park.
With nothing but bragging rights up for grabs and a final on the weekend looming, Victory named a youthful side and were rewarded for it with Kenny Athiu in particular impressing early on.
It would be Athiu who set up the opening goal after a strong half from Victory, with the forward's ball into the box stroked home by fellow young gun Pierce Waring with suggestions it may have come off a Shanghai defender.
Sparked into life by the goal, Shanghai would pull themselves level within minutes though as Lin Chuangyi converted from close range to ensure the scores were locked at 1-1 going into the break.
Victory started the second half with continued enthusiasm however and would restore their lead in the 68th minute with a Terry Antonis cross headed home by Jai Ingham.
The introduction of Brazilian star Hulk added an extra threat for Shanghai but Victory would hold their nerve to exit Asia with their heads held high.
