McCarthy backs Kaizer Chiefs to retain Masilela

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy believes that current left-back Tsepo Masilela needs to be retained as he is the most experienced player at the club.

“For me, Tsepo is the most experienced player at Chiefs especially at the back and for me his age has nothing to do with his performance,” McCarthy told Goal .

“I mean, the past two seasons or so he was the best defender at Chiefs. He was the most consistent defender. He played most of the games. He does his job," he said.

The 31-year-old has found it hard to cement a permanent place at the club this season following the arrival of Sibusiso Khumalo from SuperSport United.

“I don’t know if he is in the plans of the coach, but if I was in charge of Chiefs I would keep him. I would let him guide Khumalo and the youngsters in the (MultiChoice Diski Challenge) MDC,” McCarthy added.

As much as Masilela have been caught for pace a few times this season, McCarthy believes his experience will help him to stop attackers beforehand.

“Tsepo is the most experienced player in the Chiefs team. He does his job every time he plays. He might get caught for pace, but it’s rare because if he positions himself well before the attacking player he will be able to prevent it," he stressed.

“He is an experienced player who knows what will happen before a player starts attacking,” McCarthy concluded.
