Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Keagan Buchanan will be invited for a trial by Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Maritzburg United.

The 27-year-old central midfielder was recently released from his contract with Amakhosi having failed to live up to expectations at the Naturena-based outfit.

Amakhosi released Buchanan along with midfielders Edmore Chirambadare and William Twala, full-backs Sibusiso Khumalo and Tsepo Masilela last week as the club made changes to their squad ahead of the upcoming 2018/19 campaign.

Buchanan made only nine appearance in the league for Chiefs during his two-year spell with the club having joined the Soweto giants from Bloemfontein Celtic in 2016.

However, Maritzburg club chairman Farook Kadodia has confirmed the KwaZulu-Natal side’s interest in signing the former South Africa under-20 international, although he stated that they plan on inviting Buchanan for a trial before a decision can be made.

“We will invite him to come and train with the team,” Kadodia told Isolezwe.

“We want to assess the player and find out why he didn’t get a chance to play,” he said about the former SuperSport United reserve team player.

One of the reasons why Buchanan struggled to make an impact at Chiefs was because of long-term injuries which he suffered at both Celtic and Amakhosi.

As a result, the diminutive player, who was nurtured in the Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town academies, has made only 17 league appearances in the last three seasons.

“Having him here will help us know if he was not given a chance or was he suffering from injury. We want to see if he can adapt to the Team of Choice’s style,” he concluded.

It remains to be seen if the former FC Cape Town playmaker will accept the Team of Choice's offer for a trial.
