Maponyane backs Bafana Bafana to continue where they left off against Guinea-Bissau

Legendary Bafana Bafana striker Marks Maponyane believes the team will continue from where they left off against Guinea-Bissau when they welcome Angola to the Buffalo City Stadium in East London on Tuesday.

“Looking forward to Tuesday, I know Angola is a very aggressive team and I have seen them play on several occasions. So, I am sure we will continue from where we left off,” Maponyane told Goal.

Maponyane added that interim coach Owen Da Gama could give the likes of Luther Singh, Phakamani Mahlambi and goalkeeper Shuaib Walters, who all didn’t feature against Guinea-Bissau, the opportunity against the Angolans.

“A lot of players were not given a chance because you can only play six subs, and I am sure the coach will look back and decide what combinations can work for him in the game,” Maponyane said.

The TV pundit was impressed with the way Bafana put the West Africans to the sword over the weekend.

However, he cautioned that the defensive as well as offensive departments have a lot of unfinished work.

“I would say we just need someone to finish off the chances, not someone who is a hard-hitter but someone who is just ready to take a spot and tuck it in and not overelaborate things,” Maponyane said.

“Let me separate the good from the bad. Firstly, they are looking good. They have the energy. They are knocking the ball around nicely," he exlained.

“Then we come to the bad things. Against strong teams in qualifiers at the back, we still have gaps where we are too loose and we could be punished. So, these are the things I have picked up. But overall, I wouldn’t say I am impressed. I would say overall, I am content with what they did,” Maponyane continued.
