Like a fairy tale, Lorient seem headed for salvation after all. Despite spending the bulk of the season at the bottom of the table, three straight victories have seen them move off the nadir of Ligue 1 into 18th place.
Waris equalized for Les Merlus on 42 minutes with a beautiful shot from outside the box that was set up by Jeremie Aliadere after Corentin Tolisso had put the hosts ahead in the 28th minute.
It was the Ghanaian striker’s eighth goal of the season in 29 matches (25 starts).
It then became the Moukandjo showcase in the second half as the Cameroonian set up Sylvain Marveaux to make it 2-1 on 49 minutes.
Moukandjo made it 3-1 on 74 minutes off a deadly counter-attack that left the Lyon back line exposed as he tapped in a pass from Steven Moreira.
The stunned hosts were then left in disarray six minutes later when goalkeeper Anthony Lopes miskicked a pass to his defender, which Moukandjo pounced on to make it 4-1.
The 28-year-old Cameroonian has now notched 11 goals in 22 matches (21 starts) in Ligue 1 this season.
Lorient moved into 18th spot with their 31st point of the season, same with 17th placed Nancy.
While the two bottoms teams on the table get automatically relegated to Ligue 2 at the end of the campaign, the team placed 18th will go into a promotion/relegation play-off with the third-placed team in Ligue 2 on a home and away basis.
