The NPFL giants face a tough challenge against the Brazilians, but must play with caution to avoid defeat

Plateau United defender, Ogene Elijah has warned that Lobi Stars could ruin their chance of progressing in the Caf Champions League if they opt to defend against Mamelodi Sundowns in Pretoria.

The Nigerian champions are on the cusp of elimination from the lucrative club competition after they only garnered four points from four games and Elijah who took part in the same competition with Plateau United last year opined that the Pride of Benue must target an away win.

“I believe that Lobi Stars are still with a chance to qualify from their group if they go to South Africa with the mindset of beating Mamelodi Sundowns,” he told Goal.

“I want to say that Lobi Stars must go on the offensive in Pretoria but they must do so with caution. They can’t afford to go there and be playing for a draw. They must learn something from the ongoing Uefa Champions League where Ajax and Manchester United have qualified for the next round of the competition despite losing the first leg at home.

“Lobi Stars must go to South Africa without fear and strive to fight for the maximum points from the blast of the referee’s whistle until the very end. They have the players and what is left of them is to play with the mentality that they can do it.”

Elijah also feels that Lobi Stars are facing Mamelodi Sundowns at the right time for the Nigerian side with their hosts’ not too inspiring display in their recent matches in the South African Premier League where they have only recorded a win from their last four games.

“I have been watching the games of Mamelodi Sundowns recently and they have not been playing well and I believe Lobi Stars should have a chance if they do the right thing,” he continued.

“They lost their last league game to Cape Town City and were held at home by another team (Bloemfontein Celtic) in the game before that. They have no proper motivation presently and Lobi Stars must capitalize on it to pip them to the ticket.

“Lobi Stars players must see it as their last chance at seeking a place in the quarter-final and they must be brave just like they were against Wydad Casablanca in Morocco in spite of losing the first leg at home to the same opponents.

"They actually started the group stage poorly but they have the opportunity to end it well with a good display in Pretoria.”
