Kotoko coach Lugarusic rejects 'best GPL club' tag

The Porcupine Warriors are without defeat in their first four games of the season leading to praise from supporters but the coach is being careful

Asante Kotoko have picked three wins and a draw in their first four games of the season, leading to praise from many observers who have tagged the club as currently the best in the top-flight, but coach Zdravko Lugarusic isn’t carried away.

The Croatian manager believes his charges need to improve to achieve their target for the season and that there are other exceptional players he has spotted at other clubs.

“Many people are talking about the quality of my players, others are suggesting that I have the best quality of players so we are the best in Ghana but I reject this tag,” Lugarusic told Light FM.

“Despite our perfect start to the campaign, I saw so many talented players in other clubs who can equally play for Kotoko given the opportunity. Bechem United, Berekum Chelsea and Ashanti Gold have five or six players who can be starters in my side so you cannot conclude easily that only Kotoko have the best players.

He added: “We must be realistic. There are so many good players we’ve played against. They were not just lucky to join us and it means they remain as threats to our ambitions of winning the league. We are doing well but we have to improve.”

Kotoko have been handed a major boost ahead of their game against debutants Elmina Sharks at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday. Captain Amos Frimpong has recovered from a hand injury while new recruit defender Awal Mohammed has been cleared for his debut game.
