Asante Kotoko humbled their midweek visitors Techiman Eleven Wonders 1-0 in matchday 12 of the Ghana Special Competition thanks to defender Abdul Ganiyu, who transformed a second half penalty awarded to the Porcupine Warriors.
Kotoko, who are in a battle with Zone A current leaders Medeama for the top spot, needed a positive reaction after a run of three games without a win.
Eleven Wonders have had a better run in their last five games, winning three times, losing one game and drawing another. Their mission to Kumasi, according to coach Enos Adepa, was to claim at least a point but it failed to happen as the home side appeared determined for the ultimate.
The visitors, however, put up a commendable performance, successfully pushing back the assaults of Kotoko all through the first half to keep the scoreline blank by halftime.
The trend continued after the break, as frustrations grew at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, but a penalty awarded to the Porcupines in the 76th minute changed the fate of the game.
Defender Abdul Ganiyu successfully transformed the spot kick to break the deadlock.
Moments later, Eleven Wonders had a precious opportunity to pull level but goalkeeper Felix Annan denied Kwayie Simms, who was on a one-on-one with the shot-stopper.
The home side safeguarded the narrow lead until the final whistle to claim full marks, ahead of the weekend’s top of the able clash with Medeama.
