Giovanni Solinas' men begin their African safari with a home clash against Zimamoto in the preliminary rounds

Kaizer Chiefs are expected to raise their game against a relatively unknown Zimamoto in the preliminary rounds of the Caf Confederation Cup.

Amakhosi players received a tongue lashing from goalkeeper and captain Itumeleng Khune following the team's 2-1 loss to Orlando Pirates in the Telkom Knockout Cup semi-finals last weekend.

Things have been on a downward spiral for the Soweto giants in recent times, and while all the fingers continue to point at their technical team, the players have also not been doing enough on the field of play.

Giovanni Solinas knows that he has to turn things around sooner rather than later to ease the pressure that the club find itself in, and beating Zimamoto is non-negotiable.

Zimamoto are making only their second appearance in continental football, meaning they are not as experienced as Amakhosi, but the fact that they have qualified for two successive seasons means that they cannot be underestimated.

Squads & Team News

Willard Katsande and Bernard Parker, Kaizer Chiefs

Chiefs have registered 24 players for the tournament, and while they have some big-name stars in the current team, Solinas raised a few eyebrows when he surprisingly left out the likes of Kgotso Moleko and Gustavo Paez from his squad.

Apart from the duo, Wiseman Meyiwa and Joseph Molangoane are some of the players who have not been included altogether.

The reason is that Meyiwa is still recovering in hospital after being involved in a car accident, while Molangoane hasn't fully recovered from a broken leg he suffered at the start of the season.

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune, Virgil Vries, Bruce Bvuma

Defenders: Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Siyabonga Ngezana, Erick Mathoho, Daniel Cardoso, Teenage Hadebe, Mario Booysen, Godfrey Walusimbi, Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya

Midfielders: Dumisani Zuma, Willard Katsande, George Maluleka, Siphelele Ntshangase, Dax Andrianarimanana, Hendrick Ekstein, Lebogang Manyama, Kabelo Mahlasela, Philani Zulu, Khama Billiat

Strikers: Leonardo Castro, Bernard Parker, Ryan Moon

Potential Chiefs XI: Vries, Mphahlele, Ntiya-Ntiya, Mathoho, Cardoso, Katsande, Ntshangase, Parker, Manyama, Billiat, Castro.

Match Preview

Itumeleng Khune - Kaizer Chiefs

This will be the first ever meeting between Amakhosi and Zimamoto.

The Zanzibar-based club's only appearance in continental football was last year when they campaigned in the Caf Champions League.

They crashed out in the preliminary rounds, probably because that was more like a learning curve for them.

Zimamoto have one domestic title to their name which they won in 2016, while Amakhosi have four league titles under their belts since the inception of the PSL in 1996.

Chiefs have not progressed past the knockout stages of any Caf competition since their Mandela Cup Winners' Cup in 2001.
