ISL 2017: Mumbai City FC bring back Brazilian midfielder Leo Costa

Indian Super League club Mumbai City has retained Brazilian attacking midfielder Leo Costa for the forthcoming season. The club announced the signing on Twitter earlier today.

Leo Costa joins Lucian Goian, Gerson Vieira, Everton Santos and Rafa Jorda as the overseas signings for Mumbai City so far. The 31-year-old was a vital cog in the Mumbai-based club's semifinal run last season and will now look to better the club's fortunes when the league kicks off later this year.

After graduating from the Esporte Clube Santo Andre Academy in 2007, Leo Costa has spent most of his career enjoying short stints with clubs in Brazil. His first move to foreign shores came in 2009 when he joined Czech outfit 1. FC Brno.

He later played for numerous Brazilian clubs like Itumbiara, São Bernardo, Vila Nova, Rio Branco, Guarani and Rio Claro. Costa enjoyed most success during his time with Rio Claro for whom he was the top scorer of the 2014 Campeonato Paulista, netting nine times.

In 2016, he made the switch to ISL and signed for the Blue Army, registering two goals and an assist in 11 appearances with the club. Under the tutelage of head coach Alexandre Guimaraes, the player thrived in a midfield role supporting the likes of Sunil Chhetri and Diego Forlan up front. This season, he will be assisted in midfield by another Brazilian in Everton Santos, who was signed by the club earlier this week.
