Indian PM Narendra Modi: Under-17 World Cup will evince more interest in football

India Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi believes that hosting of the Under-17 World Cup in India would generate a lot of interest in the world’s most beautiful game among the youngsters.

The Under-17 World Cup is being hosted by India next month with as many as 24 teams participating in the competition. Six cities, namely Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Kochi, Guwahati and Kolkata are the hosts for the matches.

Kolkata’s famd Salt Lake Stadium, which has undergone massive revamp, shall host the finals of the Under-17 World Cup on October 28.

India have qualified for the competition as hosts and will play group games at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

"My dear countrymen, there is a big opportunity for our younger generation between Navratra festivities and Diwali. FIFA Under-17 World Cup is being organised in our country. I am sure reverberations of the spirit of football will be heard all around,” said PM Modi in his 36th ‘Mann ki Baat’ address to the nation.

He called on Indians to make sports an important routine of their lives.

"It will evince more interest in football in every generation. There should not be a single school-college ground in India where we will not see our youngsters at play. Come on, the whole world is coming to play on Indian soil, let us make sports a part of our lives," he added.
