The 30-year-old Indian midfielder joined ATK this season after six years at East Bengal. But unfortunately, Lobo played just one match in this season so far for Steve Coppell’s side, clocking just 16 minutes on the pitch.
He came on as a substitute in the very first game of the season against Kerala Blasters in Kolkata which ATK lost 2-0. Since then Lobo has remained out of favour under Steve Coppell.
The ATK boss has tried several players in the central midfield role which includes, Pronay Halder, Noussair El Maimouni, Everton Santos and most recently Gerson Vieira. The combination between Gerson and Halder has clicked and Coppell is likely to stick with the duo.
The lack of opportunity at ATK has prompted the Goan midfielder to initiate talks of a return to the Red and Golds and a source close to the developments at East Bengal has confirmed that the I-League side is set to approach ATK for the midfielder.
However, with ATK having already released Malsawmzuala and Sheikh Faiaz, it remains to be seen if the Kolkata franchise would let Lobo leave without signing any replacement.
East Bengal are currently struggling in the ongoing 2018-19 I-League season. They are placed on the eighth position in the league table after the first five matches with just six points.
They were off to a flying start as they won two back to back away matches. But thereafter they lost three matches on the trot which includes two home games.
Alejandro Menendez’s biggest concern is the team’s midfield which has underperformed massively so far. The Spanish coach initially went ahead with make-shift midfielder Kamalpreet Singh and Lalrindika Ralte in central midfield but later fielded Kassim Aidara too.
He is yet to find the perfect combination with the lack of quality creative midfielder in his team. Lobo should fit into the scheme of things perfectly.
