Shattered dreams: How injury ruined the career of former Arsenal starlet Ryan Smith

A fan of the Gunners since he was a kid, the midfielder never properly recovered from a knee problem sustained in 2004

Ryan Smith graduated from the Arsenal academy at the same time as players including Cesc Fabregas, Gael Clichy and Quincy-Owusu Abeiye.

The boyhood Arsenal fan made his first team debut for the club of his dreams at the age of 16 but found his first team opportunities limited following a serious knee injury in 2004.

Goal tells the story of Ryan’s path to the Gunners first team, how he was determined to bounce back from career-threatening injury and what advice he would give to budding footballers who want to follow in his footsteps.
