Ghana's Wriedt surprised to be playing for Bayern Munich

The 23-year-old talks about the surreal feeling of wearing the shirt of the European giants

Bayern Munich latest introduction Kwasi Okyere Wriedt is still in dreamland following his senior bow in the DFB Pokal triumph over RB Leipzig on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old Hamburg-born Ghanaian was an extra-time substitute at the Red Bull Arena as Jupp Heynckes’ side beat RB Leipzig 5-4 on penalties to make the third round of the DFB Pokal, following a 1-1 draw.

It was almost the perfect debut as he came close to scoring but his header from a corner came off the crossbar three minutes after being on the pitch.

“If someone had told me two years ago that I’d play for Bayern one day, I would have told them they were crazy," Wriedt told pressmen.

"I can hardly believe it. I don’t know what’s going on here.

"I’m simply really happy and proud that the trainer has given me these minutes and that the team supported me on the pitch.”

Wriedt became only the second African player in history to play for the Bavarians after compatriot Sammy Kuffour (1993-2005).

He joined Bayern on a three-year deal from third tier side VfL Osnabruck in August.

Having been on the bench in the Bavarians' last three Bundesliga games, the centre-forward will hope to make his league debut when Bayern play away to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

His rise to the first team has been due to a fine form for the German champions' second team, having netted 10 times in 12 appearances in the Regionalliga.

Born to Ghanaian parents, Wriedt could be handed a swift call-up by Ghana for November's 2018 World Cup qualifier against Egypt in the Black Stars' bid to secure his international future.

Despite once linking up with Ghana's under-20 side, the frontman is still eligible to represent Germany at senior level as he was born in Hamburg.
