Germany vs Chile: Group B heavyweights square up at the Confederations Cup

Germany and Chile are the 3rd & 4th best sides in the world respectively which makes this potentially decisive Group B clash a mouthwatering prospect

Both teams have enjoyed considerable success in recent years. Germany are world champions after lifting the trophy in Brazil 3 years ago, while Chile won back-to-back Copa America titles in 2015 and 2016. On both occasions, they defeated giants Argentina to become South America’s best. There are also contrasts between them, however. Germany coach Joachim Löw opted to bring an inexperienced squad to Russia; Chile’s boss Juan Antonio Pizzi’s group contains experienced campaigners Eduardo Vargas, Gary Medel and superstar duo Alexis Sánchez and Arturo Vidal.

It’s likely to become a straight fight between Germany and Chile to top Group B in the 2017 Confederations Cup. Who will prevail when the tournament’s youngest and oldest squads meet at the Kazan Arena?

Probable starting XI (3-5-2): ter Stegen; Kimmich, Mustafi, Rüdiger; Brandt, Can, Draxler, Goretzka, Hector; Stindl, Werner

Probable starting XI (4-3-3): Herrera; Isla, Medel, Jara, Beausejour; Aránguiz, Díaz, Vidal; Fuenzalida, Vargas, Alexis Sánchez

Key Men

Liverpool’s box-to-box midfielder Emre Can is likely to be restored to Germany’s lineup tonight and they’ll benefit from an injection of his tireless work ethic and underrated technical ability.  At 23, the ex Bayern Munich man is already relatively experienced at club level. Now’s the time for him to take a step up on the international stage ahead of next year’s World Cup in Russia.

Arsenal contract rebel Alexis Sánchez is currently mulling over offers from elite clubs around the world, but it would be no surprise if the dynamic attacker put that to one side in a bid to secure more success for Chile. Germany’s inexperienced backline will struggle to contain his darting runs and unpredictability, assuming he’s fully fit.

Key Stats

  • Germany are unbeaten in 11 matches, winning 9 in that sequence.
  • Chile have lost only 1 of their last 5 matches.
