Disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the nation over alleged chants during their opener with Germany, FIFA has confirmed

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Mexican Football Federation relating to alleged homophobic chants during the World Cup clash with Germany.

It is alleged some Mexico fans chanted slurs at Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer as he prepared to take a goal-kick in the first half of the Group F encounter in Moscow.

A FIFA spokesperson confirmed to Omnisport that disciplinary proceedings have been opened but could not comment further.

Mexico won the game 1-0 thanks to Hirving Lozano's 35th-minute effort and next face South Korea in Rostov on Saturday .

The chant, which consists of fans shouting "Ooooooooooooooooooooh" as a goalkeeper prepares to kick and culminates in a cry of "puto" (which can translate to 'whore' but also is used as a gay slur), has long been embedded in the nation's fan culture and its use has spread elsewhere in Latin America.

Mexico have faced repeated sanctions for its use over the years, which have failed to stamp out the discriminatory practice in the stands.

During the 2016 Copa America Centenario in the United States, supporters attracted heavy criticism for using the slur just days after 49 people were killed by a terrorist in an Orlando LGBT club.

"The Confederation of North, Central America and the Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) and the Confederation of South American Football (CONMEBOL) take any chants or actions that are derogatory or offensive during our matches very seriously," organisers said in a joint statement released during that tournament. "This behaviour does not reflect the true spirit of football and must be stopped."

The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) also was fined on several occasions for the chant during World Cup qualifying, but escaped a stadium ban - a fate that Chile faced three times during their campaign for similar transgressions from fans.
