Mark Rudan has suffered a costly defeat in his competitive debut in charge of Wellington

Wellington Phoenix have been bundled out of the FFA Cup after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Bentleigh Greens in the Round of 32.

In his first competitive match in charge of the Phoenix, new coach Mark Rudan found his side behind after 23 minutes when Marco Jankovic headed home for Bentleigh.

The Victorian National Premier League side may have found themselves a goal up, but were soon a man down when James Kelly was shown a second yellow card ten minutes later.

Despite the numerical advantage, Wellington struggled to create any meaningful chances against a well-structured Bentleigh outfit.

A strong shot from Sarpreet Singh, that was saved comfortably, the closest Phoenix came to avoiding the shock 1-0 loss.

There was nearly an even bigger shock in Darwin with Hellenic AC coming from behind twice, only to fall 4-3 to Western Sydney Wanderers thanks to an injury-time winner from Roly Bonevacia.

Elsewhere, Newcastle Jets edged past Gold Coast Knights 1-0 thanks to a strike from Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Devonport Strikers saw off Northcote City 3-1.

A Kosta Barbarouses strike meanwhile handed Melbourne Victory a tight 1-0 win over Perth Glory with Brisbane Roar's clash against Melbourne City held up after a neck injury suffered by Luke Brattan.

The City midfielder required a special ambulance to be stretchered from the field and taken to hospital with no update as yet to his condition.

After a 40-minute delay, the match itself ended goalless after 90 minutes with only a stunning effort from Bruno Fornaroli in the 120th minute handing City a 1-0 win.
