Kaizer Motaung of Kaizer Chiefs

COMMENT: Is Kaizer Chiefs too big for a local coach?

Kaizer Chiefs have been on the lookout for a new coach since the departure of Steve Komphela in April 2018, and they have continued to play their cards close to their chest on who could come in next season.

Several names, including that of former Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy, former Chelsea and Ghana national team coach Avram Grant and current Township Rollers mentor Nikola Kavazovic have already been bandied about.

None of South African-born coaches except Gavin Hunt, have been linked with the vacant position at Chiefs.

While some legends feel someone like Dan Malesela is more than capable of taking over from Komphela, it doesn't look like Chiefs are even looking to bring in another local coach - not after going three seasons without piece of silverware.

Does this mean local coaches are not good enough to manage Amkhosi?

Coaches linked to Chiefs PS

It is no longer a secret that the club took a huge gamble by hiring Komphela, who had never won a major trophy in the PSL as a coach.

Chiefs are renowned for their success in terms of trophies, but without the right players, no coach in the world can be able to bring back the good old days.

Looking at the players Chiefs had during Komphela's tenure, it's easy to see that the club didn't do enough in the transfer market and that contributed to their lack of success.

Komphela's failure to keep the winning culture going shouldn't be used to determine whether or not local coaches can do a good job at the club.

It was however, a lesson that not every local coach can do it at a big club like Chiefs without having built a profile and winning trophies elsewhere.

As things stand, Hunt and Pitso Mosimane are the only coaches who have raised the bar really high among the local coaches having won many trophies in the past.

And if Chiefs are really going after Hunt's services, then it wouldn't be such a bad move, but they should be willing to spend money on new players to ensure that he succeeds.

The same can be said about Mosimane, who is now used to having the luxury of getting almost every player he wants in his team.

Given how reluctant Chiefs have been in spending money on quality players in recent seasons, one can safely say Mosimane would think twice if he were to receive an offer from the Soweto giants.

There are good local coaches who can do a great job at Chiefs, provided there are enough quality players who will carry the team's hopes even during trying times.
