I-League winning coach Khalid Jamil is close to joining Kolkata club Mohammedan Sporting. The former East Bengal coach is set to return to Kolkata after a gap of four months, Goal can confirm.

Mohammedan Sporting are currently struggling in the 2018 Calcutta Football League (CFL) Premier Division ‘A’. They are in the fourth position on the league table with just 10 points from six matches. Raghu Nandy’s men have lost against minnows Peerless SC and Aryan in the league.

Khalid Jamil, who parted ways with East Bengal after just one season which was deemed disappointing after the club failed to win the I-League, will now head back to Kolkata.

Under Khalid Jamil, East Bengal won the 2017 CFL title and finished fourth in the I-League and lost to Bengaluru FC in the final of the Super Cup.

The 42-year-old coach is a well-known figure in Indian football. After starting his coaching journey with Mumbai FC, Jamil moved to Aizawl FC in the 2016/17 season. In his maiden campaign with Aizawl FC, the Mumbai-based coach did the unthinkable by winning I-League title.

Under his tutelage, the minnows etched a fairy tale by punching above their weight and became the first club from North-East India to win the I-League.

After coaching at the top tier of Indian football for nine seasons, Khalid Jamil is set to manage a club in the second division. It will be interesting to see how Khalid Jamil fares with the century-old Kolkata club this season.
