Steve Bruce’s Villans meet Neil Warnock’s Bluebirds at Villa Park in the Championship this week and our tipster fancies a high-scoring encounter

Promotion contenders Aston Villa and Cardiff City go head-to-head on Tuesday night.

This had long appeared a key fixture in the race for the second automatic promotion spot but Villa’s recent inconsistency makes them a speculative 33/1 (34.0) with SportPesa to reach the top two.

Cardiff are 4/7 (1.57) favourites in the same market, and a win here would help to fend off competition from Fulham - who sit just two points behind the Bluebirds.

Latest odds

Villa have already beaten champions-elect Wolves 4-1 this year and can be found at 5/4 (2.25) to defeat another top two outfit.

Cardiff won the reverse fixture 3-0 in August and are 12/5 (3.4) to do the double over the Midlanders.

A draw – which has occurred in five of Villa’s nine home meetings with top half opposition – is 23/10 (3.3).

Team News

Steve Bruce was not happy following the 3-1 loss at Norwich and will need to find an eleven he can trust for the play-offs.

Alan Hutton and Chris Samba are injured whilst Jonathan Kodjia is yet to start a game since returning from a lengthy spell out, suggesting he will be on the bench once again.

Jazz Richards and Joe Ralls remain sidelined for Cardiff, but full-back Armand Traore is back available.

Anthony Pilkington has three goals in just 135 minutes of football this season and could start over the out-of-form Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.

Back goals

Aston Villa have scored 16 goals in their last eight games, thanks largely to the form of Jack Grealish, but they have also shipped two or more in five of their last 12.

Both teams have scored in five of Cardiff’s last six matches and two missed penalties in injury time is the only reason that trend didn’t continue in Friday’s 1-0 defeat to Wolves.

Goals at both ends here is priced at 20/21 (1.95) and looks good value.

Preview and predictions

Two of Villa’s last five outings have seen them lose with three or more goals scored, while Cardiff have won four of their last six in the same manner.

Therefore the best bet for this match is the 19/4 (5.75) on an away win with over 2.5 goals.
