AFC Leopards have opened talks to sign Rwandan defender Erick Rutanga.

Rutanga was instrumental for Rayon Sports' campaign in the Caf Confederation Cup where the Rwandan champions were eliminated in quarters after losing to Enyimba of Nigeria.

The 25-year-old was also in top form as Rayon silenced Kenyan champions Gor Mahia in the Group stages of the competition. Rutanga starred in the game assisting Bonfilscaleb Bimenyimana’s opener two minutes into the match, before calmly curling home the winner from a free-kick in the 53rd minute.

After the 2-1 win, Rutanga, formerly of APR FC, welcomed talks from K’Ogalo for a move in January. “If they bring a good deal why not? I love Gor Mahia, it is a good team with quality players, I really would like to play for them,” Rutanga told reporters at Kasarani.

Gor Mahia rivals AFC Leopards have now emerged as the clear favourites to land the defender after one of their top official, who did not want to be named, told Goal that they are serious with the deal and that is why they have opened talks with the player and his representatives.

“Yes, we want Rutanga, that is a fact; he is a player, who can add value to our team and help us stabilize defense. We are interested in signing him, and once everything is done, we will put it in the open. The talks are in early stages and that is why I do not want to disclose the finer details.

“He is a free agent, that makes it a little easier for us but we understand we are not the only ones, who want to sign him.”

Gor Mahia are also eying the player to fill the void left by Godfrey Walusimbi, who forced a transfer move to Kaizer Chiefs.
