Kelantan Football Association (KAFA) has announced that former Kelantan player and interim head coach, Zahasmi Ismail will return to The Red Warriors as their new head coach for M-League 2017.
Kelantan has been without a head coach after Velizar Popov decided not to renew his contract with Kelantan due to the financial restrictions that KAFA is currently having. The vice president of KAFA, Datuk Afandi Hamzah stated that Zahasmi’s appointment was made after several discussion were held between the two parties.
“After several discussions, we have decided that Zahasmi Ismail will be the new head coach of Kelantan FC for 2017 M-League challenge. He has signed the contract with us, and will carry the responsibility as the head coach, by planning and preparing the squad for next season, said Afandi.
Afandi points to Zahasmi’s experience with Kelantan football in being crucial in making him the new head coach for the Red Warriors.
“He already has history with kelantan. He is a Kelantan man, and has plenty of experience under his belt. He used to be the assistant head coach here, and also the caretaker for a short period of time and during that time, we think he is more than qualified for the job.
“We let him go to get some experience outside the club and we are happy to that he wants to return and be our head coach for next season. Zahasmi will have the authority of choosing the players, preparing the training schedule and training sessions with the players," added Afandi.
Zahasmi spent most of his football days as a player in Kelantan between 1986-1994 as well as from 1997 until 1999. He also took over as the interim head coach of the club in 2015 when Azraai Khor left the head coach position. He was coach of MOF FC last year.
