Van Gaal: Manchester derby is the biggest

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal says the Manchester derby will be the biggest he has managed in.

Van Gaal takes his side to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday to face the Premier League champions fresh on the heels of a dramatic 1-1 draw at Old Trafford with Chelsea.

And although the Dutchman recognises that it is just one game in a long season, he says the anticipation he has sensed within the squad showed him how important the derby with Manchester City is.

He told reporters: "This is the biggest derby that I shall manage. It is one of 38 [league] matches we have to play, but for the fans it is unbelievably big as a rivalry and I have felt that also with a lot of the players in the squad, but also especially with Ryan Giggs.

"When he presented the analysis on City, I felt more tension with him. It was good to see."

United trail their cross-city neighbours by four points but have been boosted by the news that David Silva will face up to four weeks on the sidelines.

However, Van Gaal also revealed that Radamel Falcao will miss the derby, which kicks off at 13.30GMT on Sunday.
