Things have gone from bad to worse for Malaysia U16's 2016 U16 AFF Championship campaign.

After losing 3-0 in their group opener against Vietnam on Sunday, the Malaysian FA (FAM) on Tuesday reported that 11 players from the squad are now down with food poisoning, ahead of their second group match against Philippines on the same day.

The social media post by FAM also added that only 12 players are available for the match against Philippines, which is due to be played at 4.30 pm Malaysian time at the Olympic Stadium, Phnom Penh.

An FAM official told Goal that the food poisoning happened due to the hotel food served to the players, and that the situation is expected to become worse with more Malaysian players coming down with the illness, said an official.

Malaysia need a win over Philippines to keep their hopes of qualifying to the semi-final stage from the six-team Group A alive, the target set by head coach P. Somasundram. Only the group winners and runners up qualify for the semi-finals in the competition, and Malaysia have also been drawn in the same group as tournament favourites Myanmar and Australia.
