That concludes our commentary of the Premier League fixture between Wolves and Brighton and Hove Albion. We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Wolves play again on Friday, when they host Leeds United while Brighton travel on the same day to take on Arsenal.
Brighton eventually make their second-half man advantage count, beating Wolves 3-2 at Molineux thanks to Gross’ late winner. A four-goal first half was the two sides level after 45 minutes, but the two were not equal in terms of personnel at the interval, with Semedo sent off for a clumsy last-man back foul on Mitoma deep in first-half injury time. Wolves re-emerged from the break resolute and organised in defence, forming a low block before hitting on the counter through the industrious Guedes and Adama Traore. The tactic looked to work until the 83rd minute, when more good work from an impressive Mitoma put first Undav - and ultimately Gross - in the position to seal three points for the Seagulls. De Zerbi’s side were impressive if not clinical in possession and worked the ball well on their way to a second-successive win in the league.
90' + 4' Kilman aggressively steps through the back of Undav and gives Brighton a chance to waste a bit more time over a set-piece, which Mac Allister eventually sends backwards.
90' + 2' Ait Nouri gets into the penalty area and tests Sanchez high, but the goalkeeper manages to secure the ball with two hands.
C. Ronan
B. Traoré
Wolverhampton Wanderers
90' A change in midfield for Wolves sees Ronan enter the pitch for Boubacar Traore.
J. Veltman
K. Mitoma
Brighton & Hove Albion
90' With the lead secured, Veltman comes on for Mitoma in injury time.
89' The fourth official indicates five minutes will be added to the end of the match for stoppages.
87' Mitoma passes it across to Undav, who turns Kilman and hits a shot that’s dealt with comfortably by Sa.
85' Brighton pair Danny Welbeck (25) and Solly March (24) are the two players to have had the most shots without scoring so far in the Premier League this season. By contrast, Leandro Trossard has scored with 21% of his attempts (7/34), with only Erling Haaland (36%) and Ivan Toney (23%) having a higher conversion rate among players with at least 30 attempts.
P. Groß
Brighton & Hove Albion
83' GROSS GIVES BRIGHTON THE LEAD! 3-2! The move is started by Mitoma, who drives to the byline before beating a man and cutting a pass back to the penalty spot with skill and selflessness. Undav receives the ball and turns awkwardly before shifting possession on to Gross. It looks to be taking the full-back too wide but a sliding finish rectifies that and beats Sa with a powerful slash into the roof of the net!
D. Undav
L. Trossard
Brighton & Hove Albion
82' Trossard also makes way in favour of Undav.
B. Gilmour
P. Estupiñán
Brighton & Hove Albion
82' Brighton's first alteration sees Estupinan come off for Gilmour.
81' De Zerbi looks to be readying a substitution as we enter the final 10 minutes of play, with his side not having done enough to make the man advantage pay.
79' Brighton have scored at least four goals in two of their last seven Premier League games, beating Leicester 5-2 and Chelsea 4-1. The Seagulls had only netted 4+ goals in two of their first 195 games in the competition.
77' Mac Allister is again tasked with taking the free-kick but he’s unable to find the target, sending his shot up and over the wall but also the crossbar.
76' Ait Nouri steps across Mac Allister and brings him down 20 yards from goal as Brighton continue to search for the go-ahead goal.
R. Aït Nouri
Gonçalo Guedes
Wolverhampton Wanderers
74' Ait Nouri comes on for Guedes with Davis looking to freshen up his side.
72' Wolves counter at pace after March is dispossessed on the edge of Sa’s penalty area but the pass hit over the top fails to find Adama Traore, with Webster nodding it back to Sanchez.
70' Guedes’ outswinging corner from the right is met by Dunk, who’s clearance falls right to Moutinho. Guedes is allowed to fire in a second effort but that’s repelled at the near post by Caicedo.
Adama Traoré
Hwang Hee-Chan
Wolverhampton Wanderers
68' Hwang's shift comes to an end 22 minutes from full-time, with Adama Traore coming onto the pitch in his place.
67' Mac Allister and March stand over the free-kick but it’s the Argentina international who strikes it, curling a shot to the far post that’s beaten away by the fist of Sa.
N. Collins
Yellow Card
Wolverhampton Wanderers
65' Trossard plays Welbeck through on goal, but a little tug from Collins knocks the striker off-balance and sends him down to the turf. It's a yellow card for the centre-back for the cynical foul which gives Brighton another chance to test Sa from a set-piece.
D. Welbeck
A. Lallana
Brighton & Hove Albion
65' Welbeck comes in for Lallana five minutes after the hour as De Zerbi looks to spark his attack into life.
64' A little bit of trickery about the free-kick as Mitoma puts the ball down looking to strike it, only for Mac Allister to run up and deliver a cross to the near post. Webster gets there first but he’s unable to put his header towards Sa, sending it behind for a goal-kick.
Jonny Castro
Yellow Card
Wolverhampton Wanderers
62' Jonny leaves a foot in and takes Mitoma down 25 yards from goal. It forces the referee to produce a yellow card for the substitute while Brighton are given a chance to attack from a set-piece.
61' Trossard’s backheel flick from the edge of the 18-yard box gets the ball between the Wolves centre-backs but Lallana fails to read the intent as Sa is allowed to gather.
59' Bueno cuts inside from the left and puts in a cross towards the penalty spot for Guedes, who sends a looping header towards goal. Sanchez is forced to deal with the effort, pushing it onto the crossbar and behind for a corner.
57' After a brief VAR check the referee allows play to continue from a corner, which March swings into the penalty area. Webster is presented with the opportunity of an unmarked header but the centre-back sends the chance wide!
55' Jonny slides in and takes Estupinan out after the ball had been turned behind for a corner by Collins. It’s a poor decision from the substitute who is seriously lucky to avoid giving away a penalty.
53' Guedes wins a free-kick after a cynical pull of the shirt from Mac Allister, who gives Wolves a chance to clear their lines properly after serious pressure applied by the visitors.
51' March’s corner from the right finds Dunk but the captain fails to find the target with a powerful header while leaning backwards.
50' Sa’s poor pass out from the back allows March to slide in and win possession back from Kilman but his near-post effort is denied by a flying goalkeeper, whose deflection puts it behind for a corner.
48' Jonny has taken up the role at right-back, with Bueno holding his spot on the left. The substitute will have his hands full with Mitoma, who gave Semedo an extremely difficult time in the first half.
46' Wolves get the match restarted from the kick-off!
Jonny Castro
Daniel Podence
Wolverhampton Wanderers
46' It's Podence who makes way at half-time for Jonny, who will fill the vacant spot at full-back.
The late sending off will significantly alter Davis’ team talk, as well as his tactics going forward. Hwang’s involvement has been minimal, with the forward a likely option to come off for a full-back. Adama Traore will also be involved at some stage, with his pace and strength an asset late in matches. De Zerbi will no doubt instruct his side to continue to push forward, with Estupinan make a lot of inroads down the left flank. Welbeck and Undav could be worthwhile additions off the bench, providing both link-up play and a presence in the box.
Neither side is able to take the upper hand after an unpredictable 45 minutes at Molineux, with Wolves and Brighton locked in an unpredictable 2-2 draw at the half. The visitors started with much more confidence, keeping hold of possession and inviting the press before attempting long passes to release the forwards. Lallana’s goal after 10 minutes was a deserved reward but Guedes pulled his team back level with an almost immediate response - scoring two minutes later. A penalty awarded to Wolves for a Dunk handball would give Neves the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot but the advantage would last less than a quarter-hour, with Mitoma’s header over Semedo again bringing about parity. Things would go from bad to worse for the Wolves full-back however; shown a straight red card for a foul on Mitoma deep in injury time to leave his side down a man.
Nélson Semedo
Red Card
Wolverhampton Wanderers
45' + 5' SEMEDO IS SENT OFF! RED CARD! Dunk launches a long pass over the top of the defence for Mitoma, who gets on the end of it with only Semedo covering. The right-back gets the wrong side of his opponent and clumsily pushes him over just outside the penalty area! Wolves are down to 10 men!
45' + 3' Neves delivers a dangerous free-kick into the penalty area from deep on the right wing but Dunk does just enough to rise above Collins and put it out for a throw-in on the opposite flank.
45' + 1' The fourth official indicates six minutes will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
A. Lallana
Brighton & Hove Albion
44' Lallana adds an assist to his earlier goal, providing the cross for Mitoma to finish.
K. Mitoma
Brighton & Hove Albion
44' BRIGHTON EQUALISE BEFORE THE BREAK! 2-2! Lallana’s close control takes him into the penalty area on the right ahead of Podence and Neves, giving him just enough room to dig out a cross. The flight of the ball is inch-perfect to the head of Mitoma, who nods it in over Semedo!
43' Trossard picks out Estupinan with a switch of play out to the left but the cross from the full-back is beaten away by the head of Collins.
41' Mac Allister’s corner from the left fails to find Mitoma as Semedo is allowed two opportunities to clear his lines, skewing his first effort before pumping the ball down the pitch effectively with his second.
39' With just over five minutes left in the half, De Zerbi can’t have too much to complain about other than the score, with his team looking comfortable on the ball in attack. Two moments of madness at the back have tarnished an otherwise productive half, with more surely to come from the visitors.
37' Wolves have won just two of their last 20 Premier League games (D6 L12), having won three of their four before this. They've not scored more than once in any of their last 16 league games (9 goals in total).
Rúben Neves
Penalty Goal
Wolverhampton Wanderers
35' CALMLY DONE FROM THE PORTUGAL INTERNATIONAL! 2-1! Neves steps up and strokes his penalty high into the roof of the net, ignoring Sanchez’s goal-line movements to beat the keeper and give his side the lead!
34' PENALTY! Wolves are awarded a penalty after a VAR review, with Dunk’s arm deemed to have made contact with the ball during Podence’s cross. Neves steps up to place the ball on the spot - can he put the hosts ahead?
33' After confirming that Podence was onside during the build-up, the referee is asked to come across to the monitor to review the situation, with a potential penalty hanging in the balance.
31' Podence is appealing for a handball after cutting a volleyed cross back from the byline inside Brighton’s penalty area. Dunk did have his arm up during the delivery, with the referee just holding up play before a potential Wolves corner to speak with VAR.
29' Brighton are again looking to take the sting out of the match with just under 30 minutes played, as Webster and Dunk keep it between them. The central midfielders also drop in this situation forcing Wolves forward, before a quick combination of passes looks to spring a direct attack through open space.
27' Play resumes with Guedes retaking his position on the pitch, following treatment to both a head and leg injury. The winger appears willing to try and run off the knock, with the coach certainly hoping his goal scorer will be okay.
25' Play is stopped for Guedes, who has gone down following an aerial duel with both Mitoma and Estupinan. The medical staff are on the pitch tending to him, with a number of substitutes warming up on the touchline as a precaution.
23' Brighton again threaten the Wolves penalty area, with Mitoma driving towards goal before slipping a pass through for Trossard. The delivery takes the forward slightly wide, with his inventive chipped shot landing on the roof of the net.
21' A clever touch by March allows Trossard to penetrate the defensive line but Semedo’s speed is on full display as he charges back and pokes the ball to Sa to clear.
19' Podence chips a pass into the penalty area for the overlapping run of Bueno but Webster does just enough to put off the full-back, allowing his defensive partner to clear the ball.
17' Another corner for Brighton, another easy grab for Sa, who barely comes off his line to make an undisturbed catch.
15' March’s second effort fails to trouble the Wolves defence, with the delivery sent to the far post for an easy Sa grab.
14' March swings a corner into the penalty area from the right wing looking to put his side back ahead but the near-post delivery is beaten away immediately by Neves - giving the Brighton winger a second try.
B. Traoré
Wolverhampton Wanderers
12' Boubacar Traore gets on the score sheet with an assist for Wolves' equalising goal!
Gonçalo Guedes
Wolverhampton Wanderers
12' WOLVES HIT BACK IMMEDIATELY! 1-1! WHAT A RESPONSE! Boubacar Traore takes a great first touch in midfield to win space ahead of Caicedo before threading the needle with a pass that gets past three Brighton defenders. Guedes latches onto it and charges into the penalty area before dispatching a stumbling finish into the goal!
L. Trossard
Brighton & Hove Albion
10' Trossard's unselfish pass is the assist for Brighton's goal!
A. Lallana
Brighton & Hove Albion
10' 1-0 TO THE VISITORS! Brighton’s initial corner is cleared, but Mitoma regathers possession on the left wing and plays a pass across the 18-yard box for Trossard. A lovely first-time touch plays Lallana through on-goal, with the former England international curling it into the net!
9' BRIGHTON FASHION A WONDERFUL CHANCE! Dunk plays a lovely pass over the top of the defence for Lallana, who cushions it down lovely before cutting it across to March. With the entire goal to aim at, the winger allows a defender to come across and block his effort behind for a corner!
7' Wolves have been mostly ineffective after winning the ball back, with a lack of patience and calm resulting in a number of long balls up the pitch to Sanchez in the Brighton goal. The hosts will have to show a bit more endeavour - outside of Podence - if they with to trouble De Zerbi’s defence.
5' Trossard does well to shield possession from three encroaching Wolves defenders inside the penalty area, with the striker’s back to goal. He lays it back to Mac Allister but the first-time shot is dragged wide of the far post.
3' Podence drives into the penalty area and cuts a pass back from the byline but Webster comes across coolly to clear the danger.
1' Brighton and Hove Albion get the match underway from the kick-off!
Roberto De Zerbi names an unchanged XI from the side that beat Chelsea 4-1 last Saturday. Sanchez in goal is protected by a back four of Gross, Webster, Dunk and Estupinan. Roberto De Zerbi will be looking to make it two wins in a row after notching his first Premier League victory last weekend, beating Chelsea 4-1. Sitting in eighth position at the start of play today, Brighton have recent form to rely on, as the Seagulls have lost just one of their last 10 meetings with Wolves.
The lowest scorers in the Premier League, Wolves will need a win if they wish to finish the weekend outside of the relegation places, with only Nottingham Forest below them in the table. Despite the appointment of Julen Lopetegui as coach, Steve Davis will oversee this fixture; tasked with solving the problem at striker with both Raul Jimenez and Sasa Kalajdzic injured and Diego Costa suspended.
