Commentary

FULL TIME; WELLINGTON PHOENIX 1, SYDNEY FC 1 - It's all over at Westpac Stadium and after a first half which basically meandered along, an explosive second half has seen highlights aplenty. With Sydney FC hitting the scoreboard late through a VAR-assisted penalty goal to Bobo, the Phoenix would leave it later to grab a share of the spoils. With McGlinchey nodding home in the 92nd minute, this one ends at 1-1 and the Phoenix, for now, keep their slim Finals chances alive.
Goal
90' + 2' GOAL PHOENIX; WELLINGTON PHOENIX 1, SYDNEY FC 1 - LIFELIFE FOR WELLINGTON! Their finals aspirations are still alive are the Phoenix's as Barbarouses tears down the right in pursuit of the ball. Releasing a cross towards the far post, it's nodded on by Doyle as far as McGlinchey who glances it into the bottom right corner from four yards!
89' Four minutes of added time is confirmed at Westpac Stadium..

82' WOODWORK - Italiano and the Phoenix ride their luck once more as Zullo turns his way into and out of traffic down the left. With a crafty cross with plenty of curl, Italiano believes it's going out before it drops late, deflects off the crossbar and pops out of play. Wow.

Substitution
79' SUBSTITUTION SYDNEY FC - Calver OFF
78' WOODWORK - Centimetres in this as Wellington narrowly espcape going 2-0 down with Zullo taking corner duties. With a wicked delivery from the right, the ball falls for the advancing Holosko who cracks his header into the crossbar from seven yards before Brosque misses the follow-up.
76' PENALTY SHOUT - Now it's Wellington who want a penalty shout to be looked at as Finkler plays in Krishna. With the latter breaking half a yard free, it's Wilkinson who slides in to dispossess in the nick of time befor Krishna falls over him. Phoenix players are adamant there's a spot kick; they're wrong.
Yellow Card
74' YELLOW CARD PHOENIX - For his part in conceding the penalty, Rossi goes into the notebook as Phoenix players start to question Referee Evans's decision. It's not a great look as players surround him; Durante does the right thing though and pushes team-mates away.
Penalty Goal
72' PENALTY GOAL SYDNEY FC; WELLINGTON PHOENIX 0, SYDNEY FC 1 - Ahh technology. Prior to tonight this section of play would have gone on however with VAR in use, we head upstairs for a review. From a Sky Blues corner, it's evident that Rossi lifted his hand to bring the ball to ground, and accordingly, Bobo steps up. Wasting no time, Bobo duly despatches the ball into the bottom left corner.
69' CHANCE - Superbly crafted from Sydney FC as Grant works in conjunction with Calver down the right. With Grant outlaying out, he continues his run and sweats on a late cross from Calver. Meeting it nicely and at speed, Grant's glancing header is just off by centimetres and over the crossbar from nine yards.

66' SUBSTITUTION PHOENIX - Rodriguez OFF
65' SAVED - Italiano with a world class effort to keep Wellington in the contest as Ibini has immediate impact. Turning in a cross from the heart of midfield, it picks out the advancing Bobo immaculately. With the goalmouth at his disposal, Bobo nods it on sternly and sees Italiano instinctively thrashing it clear from point blank.
Substitution
62' SUBSTITUTION SYDNEY FC - Ibini ON
Substitution
61' SUBSTITUTION SYDNEY FC - Carney OFF
60' CHANCE - Few little openings for the 'Nix again as Barbarouses takes the ball close to the byline. Nipping it back to Bonevacia, the latter plays a backheel which sees Barbarouses's shot being blocked by Buijs.
58' Fair pressure being applied here from the Wellington midfield as they look to force an error in Sydney's defence. If anything though, the Sky Blues defences are too well drilled and work their out out of danger clinically from deep inside Phoenix territory.
56' CHANCE - Play's starting to open for both sides here as Brosque drifts to the left to take possession. Hooking an intended cross straight across the top of the box, it's Grant who controls it. With space in front, Grant hits it well from 20 yards but sends it straight into Italiano's hands.
54' CHANCE - Well what's happened here then? Players almost come to a standstill apart from Finkler who chases down possession inside the left channel. With a looped-cross-cum-shot, the ball falls millimetres wide of the far post and almost richochets in. Vukovic is somewhat stunned.
52' CHANCE - Slick counter from the 'Nix as Krisna lays a cross into the right side of the box where Finkler is waiting. Cushioning the ball back to the run of Barbarouses, the latter takes it first time but volleys is straight into Vukovic's gloves from 16 yards. Promising.
50' CHANCE - Glorious chance for the Sky Blues to open their account and many, including myself, are left stunned by the result. With Brosque getting into good position, he collects the inboard pass on the edge of the area. Opening up the angle from the fringe of the box, Brosque lashes a right-footed volley half-a-yard wide from 18 yards.
48' CHANCE - Early opportunity for the Phoenix as Durante does beautifully to turn a ball to Krishna inside the left channel. With Barbarouses as support, the final ball from Krishna inside into the area only needs to find Barbarouses but is cut out by Wilkinson.
46' Underway in the second half..
HALF TIME; WELLINGTON PHOENIX 0, SYDNEY FC 0 - That's the first half completed at Westpac Stadium and it's the Phoenix, who after a slow start, have enjoyed the better opportunities. With Sydney a little off their clinical best, Wellington have defended stoutly and honestly to set themselves up with a chance. With Krishna and Barbarouses looking dangerous, it's the Phoenix who will head to the sheds the happier outfit. A tight tussle sees the scores locked at 0-0 and Wellington with everything to play for in the second..
44' SAVED - That's THE chance that needed to be buried as Finkler and Barbarouses link up down the left. With Krishna played into acres, he burns down the left before cutting into the area. Drawing out Vukovic, Krishna volleys a shot towards the far corner which Vukovic parries clear impressively.
42' Probably the cleanest attack that Sydney FC have managed in a whlle as Holosko and Calver embark on a one-two. With Holosko the final receipient, he hammers down the right and tries to curl a return ball to Calver. Rossi lets it run though and plays it back to Italiano. Calm defending.
40' Referee Evans needs to a little cautious as this game is starting to see a few spotfires in the last few minutes. On this occasion it's Grant and Rodriguez who have a coming together and a few choice words to say to each other. Adds excitement but it's becoming a little more than just niggle.
38' Nice and flowing from the Phoenix as Doyle and Finkler combine to put Barbarouses down the left. With Bonevacia cutting back infield, he duly asks for the ball and receives it. Angling across the top of the box, Bonevacia cracks a volley towards home however it's always well clear of the crossbar.
36' For what it's worth, Wellington have actually been quite good value after being tested early on. Whilst Sydney FC have had the better of play, the Phoenix need to be commended for keeping the normally fluent Sydney attack at bay for the majority of the contest. With 10 minutes remaining, we're still scoreless at Westpac. 0-0.
34' CHANCE! Should've scored here. Wellington so very definitely should have scored here as Krishna bombs on down the right. Sliding in a low tidy cross, it sits up at the neat post for Bonevacia who'd broken clear of his opponent. Hitting it first time, the ball's sent wide of the target from six yards out. Bonevacia's filthy and should be.
32' SAVED! - Vukovic to the fore for Sydney FC again but there's a tinge of a penalty in this effort. With Bonevacia lifting a ball to Krishna, the latter needs to wait for the ball to land before turning goalward from 10 yards. Sweating on the ball is Vukovic who almost climbs into Krishna's back before clearing it. In either case, Referee Evans is unmoved.
Yellow Card
30' YELLOW CARD SYDNEY FC - First booking for the night and it heads to Calver as he picks up his first card of the campaign. With an untidy stomp on Krishna's ankle, there's no cause for complaints from Calver as Referee Evans produces yellow. Nasty stuff from the Sydney defender.
28' SAVED - Vukovic has basically been a passenger for the most part today with limited interaction. With Bonevacia playing a diagonal ball into the right channel to release Krishna, the latter then breaks into the right side of the box. With venom it's Krishna who smashes a volley towards home before Vukovic taps it over the crossbar. Sublime.
26' CHANCE - It will go down as one as the Sky Blues should really have finished this off. With Dimitrijevic linking with Zullo, the latter puts in a terrific through ball which releases Brosque. Breaking into the box, Brosque lays it back for Carney who sees Rossi slide through late to turn it out.
24' Another corner for the Phoenix and it's Finkler who steps up to take the honours. With a flat delivery from the right, it's again promising enough but with Bonevacia out of position, Buijs and Calver combine to clear the danger. Wellington starting to find more position; still sloppy though.
22' Still Sydney doing the bulk of attacking as Zullo has a chance to impress with a long through. Looped into the area from the left channel, Lowry shows nice timing as he races up out of the line to nod the ball clear. Had the potential for danger with Brosque looming too.
19' Small little signs from the Phoenix but they need plenty more like this. With Doyle finding time down the left, he puts in a late cross which looks inviting enough. Buijs is clever enough to read the danger though and cuts it out at the near post.
17' Bit of feeling in this one as Finkler dances around and through three Sydney defenders down Wellington's right side. With a through ball played to Barbarouses, the latter can't position himself in front of Buijs who goes to ground shadowing the ball dead. Barbarouses gives him a spray for his effort too.
14' Momentum well and truly with the visitors as Dimitrijevic tries to release Brosque with an ambitious flick. Whilst Brosque does well to initially control it, the bounce of the ball sees it jump up and collect his right hand 10 yards out. Handball; Brosque says it shoulder. Nope.
12' CHANCE - Sydney starting to click into gear now as Carney again joins some freedom down the left. Lifting a cross across the area, the delivery falls to Brosque. Continuing his run towards the byline, Brosque tries a tight shot on an acute angle but spoons it over the side netting.
10' CHANCE - Italiano almost personally hands the Sky Blues the opener as he races outside of his area to sweep the ball. Misjudging the ball, he skews his attempted volley before the ball lobs to Brosque. From 30 yards out inside the left channel, Brosque's shot towards an open net is tame and retrieved by a scrambling Phoenix 'keeper.
8' CHANCE - Risky stuff from the Wellington defence as Holosko gets onto the end of a cross from the left. Turned in from Carney, it falls into the middle of the box before Holosko works his way onto it. Executing an audacious flick over Doyle, Holosko pleads for handball but it's not forthcoming. Ball hit Doyle's chest in either case.
6' First corner of the night for the Sky Blues as Carney takes care of the duties. With a looping effort from the left, it's Dimitrijevic who gets himself out to it first. His header is just as loopy however and eventually allows Italiano an easy take.
3' Little bit disjointed from Sydney FC in the early stages as Holosko looks for the overlapping run of Bobo down the right. Whilst Bobo's run can't be questioned, his late footwork sees him tripping himself up as the ball rolls out of play. Wellington conversely look spritely.
1' Our referee for tonight's encounter is Shaun Evans and after a brief pause for team huddles, we're all set to go in New Zealand. It's the Phoenix with first usage and running from right to left...
