Newcastle United move up to third in the Premier League courtesy of their fourth win on the bounce, defeating Southampton 4-1 at St Mary's Stadium. Miguel Almiron fired the visitors ahead with his eighth goal of the campaign. Southampton should have hit back, but Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams both missed glorious chances. The Magpies made them pay as Chris Wood and Joe Willock were clinical in front of goal to put Eddie Howe's men three goals to the good. Southampton have lacked a clinical edge in the final third and lost their discipline at the back to allow Almiron to find the net. The Saints need a huge effort in the second half to avoid a defeat.
Miguel Almiron's eighth goal of the season has handed Newcastle a 1-0 lead over Southampton at the break in their Premier League clash. Almiron surged through the Saints defence before slotting an effort past Gavin Bazunu. Mohamed Elyounoussi should have responded for the home side, but he failed to hit the target from six yards. Adams releases Armstrong down the right flank and he produces a perfect low cross for Elyounoussi to attack. He only needs to hit the target to score, but lifts his effort over the top.

31' Larios is down for the home side and may have to make way here.

24' OFFSIDE! Bellat Kotchap plays a poor backpass to Bazunu, who takes an equally poor touch. It results in a hurried clearance straight to Almiron. Wilson was offside in the build-up anyway, but Bazunu did not know.
22' Burn almost releases Almiron behind the Southampton defence, but Bazunu reacts to head clear of danger. Larios almost puts his team back into trouble as he loses possession. The home side manage to calm proceedings to quell the threat/
20' Bazunu drops the resulting corner from Trippier, but Botman cannot force the ball towards goal and the Saints scramble away the danger.
19' Trippier angles the ball to the back post for Longstaff's late run, but Armstrong spots the danger and clears behind for another Newcastle corner.
18' Willock has a run at Larios down the left flank, and he wins a corner by drawing the challenge from the Southampton full-back.
17' Bazunu has a nervy moment as he has to deal with a backpass from Salisu under duress from Almiron, but the Saints keeper does enough.
15' Elyounoussi and Perraud combine down the left flank, but as Adams collects on the left flank his cross is cleared by Guimaraes.
12' Wilson tries to latch on to a ball over the top, but it just skips off the surface and away from the forward into the grasp of Bazunu.
10' SAVE! Perraud collects on the edge of the box and hammers a low strike towards the bottom-left corner that Pope has to turn behind.
9' Pope comes through a crowd to claim a long throw from Salisu, but he drops the ball. There is a scramble as the Saints try to turn the loose ball towards goal, but Armstrong sees an attempted cross deflected behind.

5' Willock sends Longstaff down the right flank and he fires a dangerous cross into the box that Bazunu misses. However, the delivery evades Wilson and Murphy in the box.
4' Salisu launches a long throw into the box from the left flank, but the Magpies clear the danger. Murphy has space on the break, forcing Ward-Prowse to track back and slide in to stop the attack.
2' Murphy is played down the left flank into space and he hooks a cross into the box that Bazunu comes off his line to claim.
1' We're under way at St Mary's Stadium.
After winning four of five Premier League meetings with Newcastle between 2014 and 2016 (drawn one), Southampton have won just one of their last 10 against the Magpies (drawn three, lost six).
Newcastle have made only one change to their side from their win over Villa in their last outing. Joelinton is suspended after receiving his fifth booking of the season last week and is replaced in the final third by Murphy, who gets the nod over Saint-Maximin.
Southampton have made four changes to their side from their defeat to Palace last time out. Bellat Kotchap and Larios come into the backline as Lyanco and Caleta-Car make way. Maitland-Niles slots into the midfield, while Walcott returns in the final third. Diallo and Aribo drop to the bench for the Saints.
NEWCASTLE UNITED SUBS: Jamaal Lascelles, Jonjo Shelvey, Allan Saint-Maximin, Matt Targett, Javier Manquillo, Chris Wood, Ryan Fraser, Karl Darlow, Elliot Anderson.
NEWCASTLE UNITED (4-3-3): Nick Pope; Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Sven Botman, Dan Burn; Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes, Joe Willock; Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson, Joe Murphy.
SOUTHAMPTON SUBS: Alex McCarthy, Lyanco, Duje Caleta-Car, Joe Aribo, Adam Armstrong, Sekou Mara, Samuel Edozie, Ibrahima Diallo, Romeo Lavia.
SOUTHAMPTON (4-2-3-1): Gavin Bazunu; Romain Perraud, Armel Bella Kotchap, Mohammed Salisu, Juan Larios; Ainsley Maitland-Niles, James Ward-Prowse; Theo Walcott, Stuart Armstrong, Mohamed Elyounoussi; Che Adams.
Newcastle's outstanding form continued last time out against Aston Villa, hammering the Villans 4-0 at St James' Park. The Magpies are pushing themselves not only into contention for the top four, but also an outside chance in the Premier League title race. A year ago that would have been unthinkable, but under Eddie Howe the club have been transformed. He will be determined to continue their momentum to leave Newcastle in a strong position before the World Cup halts proceedings next week.
Southampton require a result to steer themselves out of the bottom three ahead of the break for the World Cup. The Saints suffered a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace last time out to continue their run of inconsistent form in the Premier League. Ralph Hasenhuttl remains under pressure in the dugout and he needs to make a strong impression before the break as the Saints' hierarchy will have a lot of time to think over the six-week interval. He needs a good performance out of his team today.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Southampton and Newcastle United at St Mary's Stadium.
