Commentary

That's all for this Champions League commentary. Goodbye.
Next up, Real Madrid host Barcelona in LaLiga. As for Shakhtar Donetsk, they welcome Dynamo Kyiv in the Ukrainian Premier League.
A last-gasp goal from Rudiger denies Shakhtar Donetsk a famous Champions League win and puts the reigning champions one step closer to qualifying for the knockout round. After a first half lacking attacking quality, with strikes from Benzema and Rodryo pushed wide by Trubin, it was the Ukrainian outfit who took the lead. Inside the first minute, Zubkov peeled off Mendy who was watching the ball, heading Mykhailichenko’s cross low past Lunin. They should have doubled their advantage after Traore had a shooting chance from close range after the Madrid goalkeeper fumbled the ball, but the striker directed the ball against the top of the bar. Rested during the week, Benzema was crowded out for most of the game, with summer signing Rudiger snatching an equaliser. Pushed forward, the defender was unmarked in the middle of the box, flicking Kroos’ cross from deep past Trubin who steamed out of his goal. Rapturous celebrations were short-lived with the goalkeeper colliding with the former Chelsea man after attempting to win the ball. However, they were both fine to complete the final few minutes.

68' Substitution for Madrid. Mendy is replaced by Alaba at left-back.
65' Lunin is called into action again, this time pushing wide a bouncing shot from Zubkov who struck the ball outside the box.
64' IT SHOULD BE 2-0! How has Traore not scored? Zubkov plays the ball into his path with the striker one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He looks to get past the Madrid goalkeeper but Lunin gets a touch. However, the Madrid man loses control of the ball with it popping back to Traore who rushes his attempt and hits the top of the bar. Vazquez was on the line but would have struggled to keep his shot out if it was on target.
63' Modric lays the ball inside to Rodrygo who looks to spin past Bondarenko but the midfielder holds his ground and wins possession.
62' Nacho plays a shot pass to Rodrygo who looks for Benzema with a chipped pass forward, but it is knocked away.
60' Valverde chips the ball from right to left with Vinicius positioned on the left side of the box. He then lays it into the path of Mendy who curls it over with his right foot.
58' Vinicius looks for Valverde but his cross has too much height on it and Trubin comes out to claim it.
L. Modrić
A. Tchouaméni
Real Madrid
57' Substitution for Madrid. It is a straight swap with Modric replacing Tchouameni in the midfield.
Vinícius Júnior
E. Hazard
Real Madrid
57' Substitution for Madrid. Hazard is replaced by Vinicius. The former Chelsea man has failed to make an impact and is taken off as a result.
54' Tchouameni looks for Benzema with a curling cross from outside the box, but the ball is too straight and Trubin comes out to claim. The Frenchman was nowhere near the destination of the ball.
52' A driven pass into the box by Rodrygo is dummied by Hazard with Benzema the target. His movement fooled the Shakhtar defence, but the ball rolls wide of the striker's foot.
51' Modric is about to come on for Madrid.
50' CHANCE! Benzema should do better. An inswinging corner finds the striker who swivels on the ball before lashing it well over the bar from close range.
48' Shakhtar Donetsk have scored two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half, only Bayern München (four) and Benfica (three) have scored more in the Champions League this season.
B. Mykhailichenko
Assist
Shakhtar Donetsk
46' It's a great cross by Mykhailichenko, but Mendy will be disappointed. The Madrid defender loses his man, allowing Zubkov to have a free header from close range.
O. Zubkov
Goal
Shakhtar Donetsk
46' GOAALLLLL! WHAT A START TO THE SECOND HALF! 1-0 SHAKHTAR! Madrid have conceded for the first time this year in the Champions League. Mudryk lays the ball into the path of Mykhailichenko who crosses the ball into the box from the left. Looking for Zubkov, he heads the ball low past Lunin.
46' Traore gets the second half underway.
The six changes have seemed to hinder the attacking flow of Madrid so far. Hazard, Rodrygo and Benzema have been quiet, with Valverde struggling to have the same impact as he did against Getafe. With Vinicius and Carvajal ready and waiting on the bench, Ancelotti should look to get them on as soon as possible. As for Shakhtar, they need to be less wasteful with the ball when entering the Madrid half. They have been taking too many touches on the ball when entering the final third and should look to move the ball quickly to avoid getting tackled.
In a match that is usually packed with goals, Shakhtar and Madrid head into the break with the deadlock yet to be broken. The game has lacked attacking quality, with both of Ancelotti’s side clear chances coming inside a minute. First, it was Benzema who had a shot saved. After an intricate move outside the box, the Frenchman latched into a reverse pass from Rodrygo before firing his attempt straight at Trubin. The pair combined moments later, with the Frenchman provider this time. The move was the same, with the Brazilian bursting down the left of the box, with his shot also being saved by the goalkeeper. Shakhtar have not tested Lunin in the Madrid net with their four shots, with their best move of the match coming through Sudakov. He slalomed past three defenders on his way to the middle of the opposition box before Nacho stormed in to clear the ball away.
45' + 1' HALF-TIME: SHAKHTAR DONETSK 0-0 REAL MADRID
45' There will be one minute of additional time.
42' Chance wasted for Shakhtar. Mudryk bursts down the left and has Bondarenko to aim for just outside the box but his pass is weak and Madrid win back possession.
41' Benzema gets on the end of the corner but gets his attempt all wrong and heads the ball well wide. He will be disappointed with his attempt.
40' STRIKE! With nobody around him, Valverde unleashes a bending shot from outside the box. His powerful effort is palmed over by Trubin who reads the movement of the ball well.
38' The game is still waiting to burst into life. The previous three instances of Shakhtar Donetsk hosting Real Madrid in the Champions League have seen a total of 14 goals scored (five for Shakhtar, nine for Real Madrid), at an average of 4.7 per game.
36' SAVE! Taking a quick corner, Madrid find Benzema who flicks the ball down the left towards Rodrygo who escapes the Shakhtar defenders. From a tight angle, his shot is pushed wide.
35' Trubin pushes a shot from Benzema wide after he receives a ball down the left of the box from Rodyro. The combination came after patient possession play just outside the Shakhtar box.
33' Sudakov dances past three Madrid defenders and finds himself in the middle of the Madrid box. Steaming in, Nacho slides in to take the ball away from the foot of the Shakhtar man.
32' Vazquez thinks he should have a corner after being tackled by Mudryk. The Shakhtar man comes in from behind to flick the ball away but the referee gives a goal-kick. The Spaniard stretches out his arms in frustration.
31' Stepanenko is up and is fine to continue after taking a powerful shot to the head.
29' Captain Stepanenko is down after blocking a shot from Kroos with his head.
29' Valverde wins the ball inside the Shakhtar half and plays a quick one-two with Hazard. The midfielder then moves inside before looking towards Benzema. However, his pass is intercepted.
27' Zubkov looks to beat Nacho inside the box, switching the ball from his left foot to his right. However, Nacho blocks his low shot.
25' Mudryk races behind the Madrid defence down the left and looks to put the ball into the box. His cross is blocked by Rudiger, with the spin of the ball allowing Lunin to claim it.
23' Traore is down after twisting in the box. The ball is kicked out of play but he is fine to continue.
21' Zubkov pulls down Tchouameni just outside the Madrid box looking to win possession. Conceding a free-kick, manager Igor Jovicevic has his hands on his head as he thought his side was in to score.
18' Rudiger latches onto a deep cross from Kroos with the defender seeing his flicked attempt pushed wide. The flag goes up for offside, but the German looked to have been onside.
17' Benzema smashes an attempt towards the goal from a tight angle but Trubin stands strong to push the ball wide.
17' Benzema and Valverde combine outside the box before the ball finds its way to Vazquez. He then crosses the ball low towards Benzema but Stepanenko comes in to win possession.
Y. Konoplya
Yellow Card
Shakhtar Donetsk
16' Konoplya gets the first yellow card of the game after sliding down Rodrygo. He pulls out of the challenge but still brings down the Madrid man who makes the most of it.
15' Benzema’s next goal in the Champions League would be his 75th for Real Madrid (currently on 74), while only two players have previously scored 75 goals for a single club in the competition – Lionel Messi for Barcelona (120) and Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid (105).
13' Rodrygo slips the ball inside to Benzema but the Madrid striker is tackled by Bondar who comes away with possession.
12' Rudiger looks for Mendy with a chipped ball over the top of the Shakhtar defence but his attempted pass has too much power on it and the ball bounces out for a goal-kick. Rodrygo was making a similar run down the centre of the pitch.
10' Kroos now shoots from outside the box but lashes the bouncing ball high and wide.
9' Shakhtar have held possession for the last couple of minutes but have failed to get the ball into Madrid's defensive third.
9' Rudiger tries an ambitious effort from distance but the former Chelsea man drags his attempt well wide of the post.
7' Real Madrid have won their last four away games in the group stage of the Champions League without conceding a single goal (12 scored). The last time they won five in a row away from home in the group stage was between December 2013 and September 2015, with four of the games in that run coming under Carlo Ancelotti in his previous spell.
5' When Madrid have possession, Kroos drops between Nacho and Rudiger. He holds possession and looks for incisive balls down the middle of the pitch.
3' Sudakov has the first shot of the game. He receives the ball in the box, but his low drive is blocked by Rudiger.
2' A switch from defence to attack from Nacho finds Vazquez who runs down the right. He attempts to find Benzema with a cross into the box but the ball is cleared away.
1' Benzema gets this Champions League clash underway.
After beating Real Madrid home and away in the Champions League in 2020-21, Shakhtar Donetsk have since lost each of their last three meetings with them in the competition – 0-5 at home and 1-2 away in 2021-22, and 1-2 away this season.
As for Madrid, Ancelotti makes six alterations to the team that beat Getafe last time out. Three of the defensive four come out, with only Rudiger retaining his place. Carvajal is replaced by Vazquez at right-back, with Militao making way for Nacho at centre-back and Mendy picked ahead of Alaba at left-back. Modric and Camavinga also drop to the bench, with Kroos starting and Valverde moving down from the right wing into a midfield trio. As a result, there are two new faces in the attack. Benzema leads the line after being rested for the previous LaLiga match, with Hazard starting on the left. Rodrygo keeps his place, meaning Vinicius misses out.
Shakhtar make one change to the side that lost to Madrid in the reverse fixture last week. Traore starts in attack, with Marian Shved dropping out of the squad. Zubkov, who scored in the striking position in the previous match moves to the right wing.
