Commentary

Thank you for following our coverage of tonight’s LaLiga match-up between Real Betis and Atletico Madrid. Until next time, stay safe!
Next up for Real Betis is the visit of struggling Valencia next Sunday whilst Atletico Madrid play host to lowly Eibar as they look to further fight back against Real Madrid and Barcelona in the race for the LaLiga title.
The points are shared in Seville and Atletico return to the top of the LaLiga standings as a result. Carrasco’s strike was cancelled out by Tello’s volley in the first half and in truth, neither side really did enough to win it in the second 45 with chances few and far between.
90' + 6' FULL-TIME: REAL BETIS 1-1 ATLETICO MADRID
90' + 5' HUGE CHANCE! Carrasco slides Correa in on goal but Bravo charges out to stop his effort from close range. Vitolo follows up with a volley but he drags his strike wide of the mark.
90' + 4' A long throw-in is delivered by Vrsaljko but Emerson gets up to clear away the danger. It looks like the points will be shared in this one.
90' + 2' BIG CHANCE! Atletico could have won it. Vitolo cuts a ball back to Correa who strikes first time. His attempt from 12 yards out is heading for the far bottom corner but Bravo gets down quickly to keep it out.
90' + 1' There’ll be a minimum of five minutes of additional time played in this LaLiga match. Can either side muster a winner at the death?
William Carvalho
G. Rodríguez
90' Carvalho comes on for Rodriguez for the final few minutes of action.
89' The corner comes to nothing but Betis break through Tello. He charges towards the Atletico penalty area but his ball to the back post is cut out by a backtracking defender.
88' Saul strikes from just outside the Betis box, but Mandi blocks his attempt out for a corner. Atletico’s big men are up from the back.
86' Betis still look very threatening themselves on the attack and the hosts will look to exploit any lapse in concentration at the back from Atletico in the final few minutes.
84' The visitors are just beginning to turn the screw here as they look to steal the three points on offer.
81' Atletico have just over 10 minutes left to find a winner in this LaLiga clash. The visitors haven’t been at their best this evening, but they won’t mind that if they can snatch a vital late winner.
Š. Vrsaljko
K. Trippier
78' Trippier has to come off for Atletico with a knock. Vrsaljko takes his place at right-back.
77' SO CLOSE! Lainez nearly scores with his first touch for Betis. Tello finds the midfielder in the box who then smartly turns away from Lodi at the back post before his strike from close range is tipped behind by Oblak.
D. Lainez
Aitor Ruibal
75' Another switch for the hosts as Lainez joins the action at the expense of Ruibal.
74' BLOCK! Betis break and Ruibal is in on goal all of a sudden. The midfielder checks his run to beat one man before unleashing a strike at goal from 15 yards out, but Gimenez does brilliantly to track back and block the attempt.
71' Betis have a free-kick in a dangerous position on the left wing as Moreno is brought down but Fekir’s subsequent delivery is poor, and nothing comes of the set-piece.
69' Fekir tries to find Juanmi with a throughball down the left wing but the French midfielder just about overhits his attempted pass. The hosts would have been in on goal if he pulled that one off.
67' It could be argued that Atletico opt for defensive strength over attacking flair but even by their own standards, the visitors have been flat tonight in possession. It’s all very laboured in midfield at the minute and not at all quick enough to catch out the Betis defence.
Vitolo
H. Herrera
63' In the second, Herrera makes way for Vitolo.
Renan Lodi
Hermoso
63' A double change for the visitors at the same time. The first sees Lodi replace Hermoso.
Juanmi
Joaquín
63' A first substitution of the evening for Betis as Joaquin departs. Juanmi takes his spot upfront.
62' Betis are definitely looking like the most likely side to take the lead here in Seville. This time Fekir bursts past Hermoso and into the box but his cut-back misses the onrushing Tello.
61' The home side have two corners in quick succession, but both are dealt with expertly by the Atletico defence.
60' Betis push forward again but this time Tello sees a shot blocked by Trippier inside the Atletico box.
58' SAVE! Fekir delivers a corner for the hosts and Emerson rises highest in the box. The defender heads at goal with power but it’s straight at Oblak who palms away the effort.
55' A long Atletico throw is headed away by Bartra but only for a corner. Koke whips in the resulting set-piece but again the Betis defence holds firm.
53' Moreno catches Savic with a late tackle and is lucky not to be booked by the referee.
52' Due to that injury to Joao Felix, it looks like Atletico have now switched to a 3-4-2-1 set-up with Saul and Koke playing as the attacking midfielders behind Correa.
49' Bravo slides in to clear the danger with his feet as Carrasco looked set to latch onto the end of a throughball from Herrera in the Betis box. That’s great goalkeeping from the Chilean.
L. Torreira
João Félix
48' Atletico are forced into an early second half substitution as Joao Felix is replaced by Torreira. The forward goes off due to an injury picked up right at the end of first half.
46' Both sets of players are back on the field and the second half is under way!
Betis would likely take a draw in this encounter, but Atletico need more realistically. The visitors haven’t created too many chances in the first half though so expect to see some prompt changes in the second if they fail to score again early on.
An even first half comes to a close with both sides heading into the break on level terms thanks to strikes from Carrasco for Atletico and Tello for Betis. The visitors took the lead early on in their quest to go back top of the LaLiga standings through the Belgian midfielder but were pegged back by the hosts midway through the opening 45 minutes.
45' HALF-TIME: REAL BETIS 1-1 ATLETICO MADRID.
44' Fekir tries to advance down the right wing for Betis but Gimenez is equal to the task and dispossesses the Frenchman with ease.
42' Real Betis coach Manuel Pellegrini has managed five LaLiga games against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, without winning any of them (D2 L3).
39' CHANCE! At the other end Atletico respond and Carrasco hits the side netting from just inside the penalty area.
37' SHOULD HAVE SCORED! Betis should probably be leading. A cross into the box is flicked on by Ruibal and all Emerson has to do is strike home from close range. Instead, the defender miskicks his volley and can’t convert under pressure from Carrasco.
35' CLOSE! Correa sprints into the box, takes on Bartra then pokes a ball towards the back post. Moreno tries to clear the danger, makes a meal of it but fortunately for the home side Bravo is on hand to collect the ball with Joao Felix lurking.
34' Carrasco drags back Rodriguez in midfield and the pressure is relieved on the Betis backline for now. Despite conceding that early goal, the hosts have looked relatively strong in defence ever since.
32' After earning 24 points out of 24 in LaLiga between December 2020 and January 2021 (W8), Atletico Madrid have only taken 16 of the last 30 available (W4 D4 L2).
29' Atletico play the resulting set-piece short but Correa’s attempted cross from the left is held on to well by Bravo. The visiting forward then tries his luck from distance moments later, but his strike easily clears the Betis crossbar from 25 yards out.
27' Mandi upends Correa and the visitors have a free-kick in a dangerous position.
25' Perhaps surprisingly, Yannick Carrasco’s fifth-minute goal is the earliest Atletico have scored this season in all competitions.
22' Canales strikes from distance but his left-footed effort flies over Oblak’s crossbar.
Tello
Goal
20' GOOAAAAALLLLL!!! 1-1. BETIS ARE LEVEL THROUGH TELLO!!! A perfect response from the hosts. Moreno delivers a fantastic ball into the box from the left wing and Tello volleys into the far bottom corner from 10 yards out. It’s a delicious finish from the midfielder.
Álex Moreno
Assist
20' Lovely play from Moreno who picked out the onrushing Tello brilliantly in the crowded Atletico box.
18' Atletico think they have a penalty after Mandi fouls Carrasco in the box but the play is brought back for an offside in the build-up.
16' GREAT SAVE! Hermoso plays a deep cross over to the back post and his delivery is met by Saul. It’s a strong header from close range from the midfielder that is destined for the back of the Betis net, but Bravo does brilliantly to get down and keep the effort out.
14' Betis are beginning to grow into this LaLiga match now and have taken control of the possession over the past few minutes. Moreno advances forward down the left and tries to pick out a teammate in the Atletico penalty area but Felipe mops up the danger cleverly.
12' Atletico Madrid have lost only one of their last 11 away games against Real Betis in LaLiga (W8 D2) – 1-0 in February 2019, following a penalty from Sergio Canales.
10' The visitors force another corner but Koke’s delivery is cleared away by the Betis defence.
8' Given Betis’ recent great form, especially at home, it was crucial for Atletico to get off to a flying start tonight and they haven’t disappointed. The visitors push forward again but this time Joao Felix is muscled off the ball by Emerson who clears.
Á. Correa
Assist
5' It's great work inside the penalty area from Correa who set up the Belgian with a neat pass.
Y. Carrasco
Goal
5' GOOOOOAAAALLLLL!!! 1-0 TO ATLETICO. CARRASCO!!!! It’s a very early breakthrough for Simeone’s men. Joao Felix finds Correa in the box and he beats the onrushing goalkeeper to the ball. The forward then plays a smart pass backwards and there’s Carrasco to turn home under no pressure from close range.
4' The opening corner of the match comes to nothing as Betis clear their lines confidently but Atletico continue to press their opposition early on in this match-up.
3' Atletico have kept hold of the ball for the first few minutes of this LaLiga clash. Trippier looks to find a team-mate in the box with a whipped cross but Emerson clears behind for an early corner.
1' The referee blows his whistle and we’re under way here in Seville!
The players are emerging from the tunnel and kick-off is just moments away.
Real Betis have won five of their last six home games in LaLiga (L1), including the last three in a row. The last time they won four consecutively at home in the competition was in April 2018 (4).
Atletico arrive in town with several key players missing. Luis Suarez, Marcos Llorente and Geoffrey Kondogbia are all suspended whilst striker Moussa Dembele misses out through injury. As a result, the away side start with Savic, Gimenez and Hermoso as the three central defenders with Trippier and Carrasco operating as the wing-backs. Herrera, Koke and Saul all start in central midfield whilst Correa joins Joao Felix up front for the visitors.
Real Betis come into this clash without defender Victor Ruiz due to his recent suspension so boss Manuel Pellegrini opts for a back four made up of Emerson, Mandi, Bartra and Moreno. Rodriguez and Canales anchor the midfield with Tello and Ruibal starting on either wing. Fekir plays in the number 10 role behind Joaquin who leads the line for the hosts.
ATLETICO MADRID SUBSTITUTIONS: Ivo Grbic, Renan Lodi, Sime Vrsaljko, Felipe, Vitolo, Lucas Torreira, Sergio Camello.
ATLETICO MADRID (3-5-2): Jan Oblak; Mario Hermoso, Jose Gimenez, Stefan Savic; Kieran Trippier, Koke, Saul Niguez, Hector Herrera, Yannick Carrasco; Joao Felix, Angel Correa.
REAL BETIS SUBSTITUTIONS: Joel Robles, Juan Miranda, Martin Montoya, Sidnei, Paul Akouokou, Diego Lainez, William Carvalho, Yassin Fekir, Juanmi, Loren Moron.
REAL BETIS (4-2-3-1): Claudio Bravo; Emerson, Aissa Mandi, Marc Bartra, Alex Moreno; Guido Rodriguez, Sergio Canales; Aitor Ruibal, Nabil Fekir, Cristian Tello; Joaquin.
Two of LaLiga’s in-form sides meet in Seville as Diego Simeone’s men look to reclaim top spot in the standings after rivals Real Madrid overtook them courtesy of yesterday’s victory over Barcelona. Real Betis will be looking to claim a scalp on home soil though and Atletico will have to be wary given that the hosts have only lost once in their last seven matches.
