Final Tournament

That brings an end to our coverage of the European Championship Qualifier between Portugal and Lithuania at Estadio Algarve. Thank you very much for joining us. Goodbye!
Following results elsewhere, Portugal’s hopes of qualification now go down to their final group match against Luxembourg. Lithuania, meanwhile, finish their campaign without a win, and return to action with a friendly against New Zealand next time out.
After a highly-entertaining contest, Portugal walk out deserved winners and claim all three points. The home side started well and took the lead through Ronaldo after just seven minutes, before the captain doubled the scoreline 15 minutes later. In the second half, Santos’ team soon found their stride and a quick-fire double from Pizzi and Paciencia after 52 and 56 minutes respectively made it four. Silva extended the hosts’ advantage on 63 minutes before Ronaldo secured his hat-trick and bagged Portugal’s final goal two minutes later.
90' + 3' Jota catches Mikoliunas and the away side are awarded a free-kick inside their own defensive third.
90' + 2' The home side are continuing to work the ball around neatly as they look to see out the remaining minutes. Neves tries to pick out Bruma with a long, searching pass over the top of the Lithuania defence, but it is overhit and runs behind for a goal-kick.
90' There will be three minutes of added time at the end of this match.
89' Portugal win another free-kick in the centre of the park after Lasickas was deemed to have handled the ball.
88' Moutinho looks for Jota at the back post with an out-swinging delivery from deep, and the substitute heads wide from the centre of the box.
86' Kazlauskas looked to be well placed to have a shot on Portugal’s goal, but is penalised for a handball and the hosts are awarded a free-kick inside their own penalty area.
85' Following his hat-trick, Ronaldo is now only two goals away from 100 international goals.
Diogo Jota
Cristiano Ronaldo
83' Ronaldo, the hat-trick hero, is the latest player to be substituted as Jota comes on to replace him for the final few minutes.
83' COULD HAVE BEEN SEVEN! Moutinho’s cross into the area is poorly defended allowing Bruma to have a strike at goal from the centre of the box. The initial effort is well saved by Setkus before he was forced to make another stop after the rebound deflected towards goal off Girdvainis.
D. Kazlauskas
F. Černych
81' The visitors make their final change as Chernykh comes on for Kazlauskas. There are just under 10 minutes of regulation time to play.
S. Mikoliūnas
Yellow Card
80' Lithuania were enjoying their best spell of possession, but after cheaply losing the ball, Mikoliunas is shown a yellow card after cynically pulling back Bruma.
78' Serbia now lead Luxembourg 3-2, meaning that, if results stay the same, Portugal cannot secure qualification following the conclusion of this match.
76' Lithuania get a corner to the left after Rui was forced to put it behind, but the delivery was powerfully headed clear by Dias.
74' GOOD SAVE! Ronaldo found himself in plenty of space down the right side of the penalty area and floated a cross in towards the far post. Paciencia got the better of Mikoliunas, but Setkus was well placed to keep the effort out at his near post.
João Moutinho
Bruno Fernandes
72' Portugal also opt to make their second change as Fernandes comes off for Moutinho.
J. Lasickas
P. Golubickas
72' The visitors make their second alteration of the match as Lasickas replaces Golubickas. It remains 6-0.
71' Following a foul by Simkus, Ronaldo once again tries his luck from a direct free-kick from distance, but this time sends it over the bar.
70' After receiving the ball from Neves, Rui fires a 35-yard effort wide to the left of Setkus’ goal.
68' OVER! Ronaldo should have added another, but following Paciencia’s lay-off from the left, the captain gets under the ball and scoops a left-footed effort over the bar from the centre of the box.
Bernardo Silva
66' Portugal make their first substitution as Bruma comes onto the field in place of Silva. There are just under 25 minutes of normal time left to play.
Bernardo Silva
65' After grabbing a well-deserved goal, Silva turns provider once again. The winger picks his head up and finds Ronaldo after skipping beyond Mikoliunas, and the Portugal captain was never going to miss from there. Another ruthless attack from Santos’ side.
Cristiano Ronaldo
65' RONALDO HAT-TRICK! Silva is once again at the heart of Portgual’s attacks as he this time breaks away down the left side of the penalty area before pulling it back for Ronaldo. The Juventus forward takes the pace out of the pass with an excellent first touch before curling the ball into the bottom right corner. 6-0.
Ricardo Pereira
63' Ricardo Pereira has stretched Lithuania for most of the game by offering Portugal real width down the right flank. On this occasion, the Leicester defender plays a well-weighted pass into Silva’s path who found the net after a sublime first touch.
Bernardo Silva
63' GOAL! Silva makes it five! Ricardo Pereira drives a low cross into the box from the right-hand side of the field and after making his way into the area, Silva controls it well before firing into the bottom left corner. 5-0.
62' OVER! Pizzi clips a cross into the far post, but Paciencia can’t keep it down as he heads over from a few yards out.
60' SMART SAVE! Following a foul by Slivka on Rui, Ronaldo’s free-kick from 30-yards out forces Setkus to get down to his right and tip the ball behind for a corner.
58' SO CLOSE! Ronaldo goes close to securing his hat-trick as his driven strike from the centre of the box deflects inches wide of the far post off Andriuskevicius.
D. Matulevičius
M. Kuklys
57' Lithuania make their first change of the match as Matulevicius replaces Kuklys.
Gonçalo Paciência
56' GOAL! Paciencia adds another! Silva cut in from the right-hand side of the field after some neat control before whipping a low cross into the area. The delivery was fumbled by Setkus and Paciencia was there to slot it into the bottom left corner from close range. 4-0.
54' Simkus clips Paciencia’s heels and Portugal win a free-kick down the left flank.
Bruno Fernandes
52' Fernandes has been a constant threat and this time played an inch-perfect pass into the path of Pizzi who added Portugal’s third, albeit with the help of a rather fortuitus deflection. The hosts in total control.
52' GOAL! Portugal add a third! From the right side of the penalty area, Pizzi picks the ball up after a wonderful throughball from Fernandes. The midfielder opens up his body before seeing his shot from a tight angle deflect beyond Setkus. 3-0.
51' Portugal have picked up where they left off as they continue to dominate the ball in the early stages of the second half. Rui receives a pass down the left flank and sends a first-time cross into the box which Palionis hooks to safety.
49' Lithuania win a free-kick just inside of their own half after Fonte pulled Chernykh to the floor.
47' Portugal work another short corner down the right-hand side of the field, and Paciencia heads Pizzi’s near-post cross well wide of the goal.
46' We are back underway! Buquet, the referee, blows his whistle and Portugal get the second half kicked off.
The home side will be pleased with their performance thus far and will look to continue in much the same fashion after the restart. Ronaldo and Silva have caused Lithuania all kinds of problems throughout the opening 45 minutes and both will be vital if the hosts are to build on their advantage after the break. Lithuania, meanwhile, can count themselves lucky that Portugal only have a two-goal lead. The visitors have had some joy down the right wing through Novikovas, who will be vital in driving Jankauskas’ team up the field in seeking to ease the defensive workload.
Following a dominant first-half display, Portugal take a two-goal in at half time. The hosts have been on the front foot since the very first whistle and broke the deadlock after just seven minutes when Ronaldo converted from the penalty spot after being brought down by Mikoliunas. 15 minutes later, Santos’ side doubled their lead after Paciencia pounced on a defensive mistake before playing in Ronaldo who added his second with a curling, first-time effort from the edge of the box. Portugal had numerous chances to extend their lead later in the half but failed to convert them.
43' Girdvainis was down momentarily after landing awkwardly following a defensive header, but he is now back to his feet and able to continue.
42' Fonte spotted the run of Paciencia ahead of him, but the referee’s assistant had his flag up for offside against the striker who just went a fraction too early.
41' Paciencia gets played in down the left side of the penalty area and sees his cross deflect off Andriuskevicius before looping up into Setkus’ arms.
40' Slivka attempts to play a cross-field pass into the path of Andriuskevicius, but Rui steps up to reclaim possession for the home side.
38' Setkus gives the ball away cheaply to Ronaldo, but the Portugal attacker fires well over the bar after driving into the box.
37' Neves wins a corner for the home side after his effort deflected behind off Girdvainis. Portugal work the set-piece short before Rui unleashes a long-range drive which Setkus is equal to.
36' In the other match in Group B, Serbia currently lead Luxembourg 1-0.
34' Ronaldo finds himself in a yard of space but drags his left-footed shot wide to the left of Setkus’ goal from distance.
33' After receiving the ball from Silva just inside of the Lithuania penalty area, Ronaldo tries a clever backheel to set the Manchester City winger through on goal, but Palionis was well placed to make a crucial interception.
32' Mikoliunas tries his luck from range after the ball broke kindly for him, but Fonte stood strong to make the block.
32' Portugal have completed 271 passes so far in the match. By comparison, the away side have managed just 85.
30' Simkus is caught by Paciencia and Lithuania win a free-kick deep inside their own half.
29' OVER! Pizzi sends an in-swinging cross into the box from deep which Ronaldo chests down for Paciencia, who lashes his first-time strike over the bar.
M. Palionis
Yellow Card
27' After initially awarding a penalty, the referee instead gives a corner but does show a yellow card to Palionis for dissent amidst the decision-making process.
25' Ricardo Pereira whips a good cross into the area, and after getting across Girdvainis, Ronaldo steers an effort straight at Setkus.
24' Portugal look like scoring every time they come forward. Silva is finding pockets of space all over the attacking third of the pitch and is proving impossible to pick up.
Gonçalo Paciência
22' The away side are finding themselves trapped in their own half and have already made a handful of mistakes. This time Paciencia, the Frankfurt forward, presses high up the park and capitalises on a defensive error before sliding a perfect ball through for Ronaldo who applies the finish. A ruthless attack.
Cristiano Ronaldo
22' WONDERFUL GOAL! Ronaldo makes it two! Lithuania once again fail to clear their lines and Paciencia is alert to reclaim possession and send it through for Ronaldo. The attacker takes it first time and bends it beyond Setkus and into the top right corner from the edge of the box. 2-0.
20' Following a corner, the loose ball drops to Paciencia on the edge of the box, and his strike is fired straight at Setkus who makes a simple save.
19' ANOTHER BLOCK! Rui combines with Silva down the left wing before pulling the ball back for Ronaldo, who fires straight at Girdvainis from the middle of the penalty area.
18' The hosts have enjoyed 82 per cent of the possession thus far in the match.
16' The away side are really struggling to get anywhere near Silva at present. The Manchester City winger strides his way into the box but his powerful, low cross evades everyone in the middle.
15' CRUCIAL BLOCK! Silva beats Lithuania’s deep block with a lofted throughball for Ricardo Pereira. The full-back drives a low cross into the box, but Paciencia’s close-range effort is well blocked by Mikoliunas.
14' GREAT SAVE! Silva floats a wonderful ball over to the left for Rui, who sends a dangerous cross into the box. Paciencia gets the better of Girdvainis, but sees his header clawed away by Setkus when it looked destined for bottom right corner.
12' Fernandes has a go from the edge of the box, but his right-footed effort deflects out for a corner off Chernykh. The resulting set-piece comes to nothing.
11' Neves lofts a dangerous cross in towards the far post which Paciencia looks to attack, but Palionis just gets enough on it to take the ball away from the striker.
9' The hosts have quickly settled into their rhythm as they continue to enjoy most of the early possession. Silva is dropping deep to pick up the ball as he looks to make something happen.
8' Paciencia is too eager to win the ball back high up and the park and concedes a foul for impeding Novikovas.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Penalty Goal
7' GOAL! Ronaldo gives Portugal an early lead from the spot! The Juventus attacker fired the set-piece straight down the middle of the goal, and although Setkus got something on it, the effort was too powerful and flew into the roof of the net. 1-0.
6' PENALTY! Lithuania fail to clear their lines and in looking to hook the ball away, Mikoliunas catches Ronaldo from behind. The captain will take it…
5' JUST OVER! Down the right flank, Silva shows quick feet to drive by both Andriuskevicius and Girdvainis before picking out Ronaldo in the centre of the box. From close range, the Portugal captain steers his header marginally over the bar.
3' Novikovas skips beyond Ricardo Pereira down the right-hand side of the field before cutting inside and floating a cross wide of the far post.
1' Kick off! The referee, Ruddy Buquet, blows his whistle and Lithuania get the game underway.
The teams are out, and kick-off will soon be upon us here at Estadio Algarve.
Portugal have won each of their last three matches against Lithuania, scoring a total of 14 goals.
Portugal have struggled for consistency thus far in their qualifying campaign having won only three of their opening six fixtures. Fernando Santos’ side currently sit second in Group B and can secure qualification if they beat Edgaras Jankauskas’ team and Serbia fail to win against Luxembourg. Lithuania, meanwhile, come into the match at the bottom of the group with just one point to their name. Despite no longer being able to qualify, and having conceded 19 goals in seven matches, the away side will need to improve defensively if they are to secure their first group win.
The hosts make seven changes from their most recent defeat to Ukraine with Ricardo Pereira, Fonte, Rui, Neves, Pizzi, Fernandes and Paciencia replacing Nelson Semedo, Pepe, Guerreiro, Danilo, Moutinho, Joao Mario and Goncalo Guedes. Lithuania, on the other hand, also make seven alterations as Cerniauskas, Baravykas, Klimavicius, Lasickas, Modestas Vorobjovas, Ovidijus Verbickas and Matulevicius drop out of the side for Setkus, Palionis, Andriuskevicius, Kuklys, Slivka, Novikovas and Chernykh.
