NorthEast United will be hoping to build on their confidence-boosting win over FC Goa when they host ATK at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Friday.
The Highlanders, after sacking coach Joao de Deus for a poor start to the season, won a crucial match against FC Goa 2-1 in their previous game which saw them pocket three crucial points. Now playing under the guidance of former Chelsea manager Avram Grant, NorthEast United will want to claim another big scalp in ATK who themselves have struggled this season.
NorthEast United's biggest problem has been their finishing. Their misfiring attack has only accounted for four goals in eight games - the joint worst goals scored in the league along with Jamshedpur FC. While chances have been created with Marcinho being the inspiration in midfield, their forwards have been a huge letdown. Hence, Seimenlen Doungel's performance in the game against FC Goa comes as a relief for Avram Grant.
The defence has also troubled the Highlanders, having conceded 13 goals so far.
ATK have also had an underwhelming season so far and find themselves in eighth position, just two points ahead of their hosts. Teddy Sheringham's team has also struggled to score goals, with just six recorded this season. But with the addition of Ryan Taylor, who has played in midfield and at right-back at times, ATK have looked a bit more solid than their opponents on Friday.
However, the absence of Robbie Keane, who has picked up an injury will blunt their attack a bit.
A win at this stage could be extremely important to both teams with teams starting to break away at the top half of the table. With high stakes on the line, both teams might be tempted to start the game cautiously. Will we see an all-out approach from the teams in Guwahati or will it be a drab affair?
