Commentary

That's all from us, we hope you enjoyed the game. Until the next one, goodbye!
Brugge had already qualified for the knockout stages, owing to their superior head-to-head record over third-placed Atletico, but that 4-0 drubbing at home will put serious doubts in the minds of both players and fans hoping for a long run beyond the round of 16. Some of the defending made the four previous shutouts all look like a fluke, and they'll need to better Porto's result on matchday six if they're to finish as group winners. Porto can still be overtaken by Atleti, who are yet to play Leverkusen in the corresponding fixture, but the class shown in this match will give them renewed confidence of reaching the knockouts, and making a splash once they're there.
The undisputed spearhead of this Porto side, Mehdi Taremi lead the line superbly all game long, scoring twice and playing his part in almost every Porto attack, of which there were countless. He finished the game with four shots on target from five attempts, yielding a total xG of 1.15 and had three big chances in total. He had seven touches in the Brugge box, created two chances for his teammates in similar positions, and won eight of his 11 duels, including three of five in the air. He also won the ball once in Brugge's defensive third, and won three free-kicks too, in a dominant performance worthy of a 'proper' number nine.
It's all over, and Porto couldn't have enacted a more perfect revenge on Club Brugge than that 4-0 demolition! With the 4-0 home defeat at the Estadio do Dragao clearly fresh on their minds, the visitors did exactly the same to Brugge, absolutely shattering their perfect defensive record in the process. Brugge's often lacklustre defending didn't help, but Porto made them pay for almost every mistake at the back, with Evanilson and Eustaquio scoring within three minutes of each other to take the game well beyond the hosts' reach. Taremi followed up to add the fourth, and his second, just 10 minutes later, and complete a rout of Brugge on their own patch, which puts their spot at the top of Group B under serious threat!
90' + 2' FULL-TIME: CLUB BRUGGE 0-4 PORTO.
90' + 1' WIDE!!! Vanaken's free-kick from 30 yards is crossed onto the head of the unmarked Meijer, who can only find the side netting with his effort!
90' We're into two minutes of added time at the end of what has been an astonishing game here at Jan Breydel Stadium.
Rodrigo Conceição
Evanilson
Porto
88' Evanilson has been another of the Dragoes' star performers, and comes off late for Rodrigo Conceicao.
Toni Martínez
Pepê Aquino
Porto
88' More changes coming for Porto, with Pepe replaced at right-back by Toni Martínez.
88' Otavio has created five chances in this game, the first time he has created at least this many in a Champions League match since October 2021 against Milan.
86' SAVED!! After a Brugge corner comes to nothing, Porto can't clear it and Jutgla picks up the loose ball. He looks to curl a shot from the left-edge of the box, and the shot appears to be heading in before Diogo Costa catches it calmly!
84' SAVED!!! Vanaken comes forward with the ball and feeds Jutgla, who turns Cardoso brilliantly before firing a low shot that is parried away by Diogo Costa!
83' Buchanan shoves Taremi over for a free-kick, but Bruno Costa's cross from the right his headed well wide by Cardoso.
É. Balanta
R. Onyedika
Club Brugge
81' Onyedika also comes off for Brugge, who bring on Eder Balanta to see the game out at the base of their midfield.
L. Audoor
C. Nielsen
Club Brugge
80' Nielsen is next off for the hosts, and is replaced in midfield by Lynnt Audoor.
80' After a Pepe-led attack in the Brugge box is half-cleared, Otavio whips the ball back in to the danger area, but the cross finds no-one and curls away for a goal kick.
79' CHANCE!! Lang whips an inviting cross towards the front post, and Jutgla is just inches away from tapping it home as Diogo Costa gathers in the Porto goal!
Gabriel Veron
Galeno
Porto
77' Galeno has been simply unplayable for the visitors, and comes off now for Gabriel Veron to see out the game.
Bruno Costa
S. Eustáquio
Porto
77' Eustaquio has really grown into this game as it's progressed in Porto's favour, but comes off now for Bruno Costa.
Wendell
Z. Sanusi
Porto
77' Sanusi comes off in the first of Porto's changes, and it's a like-for-like replacement at left-back as Wendell comes on.
76' SAVED!!! A long, low pass finds Taremi, who stands up Mechele and cuts inside Boyata before firing a left-footed effort which is tipped wide by Mignolet!
75' Uribe looks to put Galeno in behind the Brugge defence from deep, but Mechele finally gets the better of him, coming across to secure the ball and deny the Brazilian another chance to wreak havoc in the Belgians' box.
73' SAVED!!! A Brugge corner sees the hosts recycle possession on the edge of the area, and Nusa finds Lang. He fires a looping shot from 20 yards, but Costa sees it all the way and denies him once more!
72' SAVED!!! Porto flood forward in numbers once again and the ball falls to Otavio, whose deflected effort from the edge of the box is well held by Mignolet!
B. Meijer
D. Odoi
Club Brugge
71' Odoi is the third Brugge player withdrawn, and Bjorn Meijer is on in his place.
A. Nusa
A. Skov Olsen
Club Brugge
71' Skov Olsen picked up a knock earlier and comes off too, replaced by Antonio Nusa for the hosts.
D. Boyata
L. Sylla
Club Brugge
71' Brugge are the first side to make changes, with the booked Sylla coming off for Dedryck Boyata at the back.
Otávio
Assist
Porto
70' Porto have been excellent at capitalising on Brugge's mistakes and this goal was no difference, with Galeno on hand to make the first move, before finding Otavio to lay off Taremi.
M. Taremi
Goal
Porto
70' GOOOAAALLL!!! There's another one!!! Brugge once again have only themselves to blame after Odoi's woeful header is latched onto by Galeno. He bursts clear before feeding Otavio, who cuts the ball back for Taremi to stroke home!!! What a performance from Porto, and the 4-0 scoreline now equals the score Brugge beat them by in the reverse fixture!
68' Porto have scored 3 goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half in this game alone, while only Bayern Munich and Benfica (both four) have scored more in the Champions League all season.
67' A coming-together in midfield between Taremi and Sylla results in a Porto free-kick, despite the Brugge defender coming off worse and requiring treatment.
M. Uribe
Yellow Card
Porto
65' Uribe leaves a late foot in the back of Lang's calf as the two contest for the ball along the touchline, and the Colombian midfielder is booked for Porto.
64' Lang's cross from the right is headed clear as far as Evanilson, but he's taken down by Nielsen upon receiving the ball and wins a free-kick.
62' Back come Brugge, and Lang bursts around the outside of Otavio, before being shoved to ground by the midfielder for a free-kick on the left edge of Porto's box.
S. Eustáquio
Goal
Porto
60' GOOOOAAAALLLL!!!! Too easy for Porto!!! Galeno gets past Mechele in the box, and cuts the ball back to Taremi. On the turn, he finds the unmarked Eustaquio at the back post, who has one shot saved by Mignolet, before scooping the rebound into the roof of the net to make it 3-0!! The previously impregnable Brugge defence has been well and truly cut to ribbons by Porto here!
59' Taremi and Evanilson play a series of one-two's on their way forward into the box, but the last pass from Taremi is overhit and Mignolet smothers the ball.
Evanilson
Goal
Porto
57' GOOOOAAAALLL!!!! The Dragoes double their advantage!!! Mechele is again caught out as Galeno ghosts in behind him to steal the ball on the left wing. His cut back is deflected away, as is Uribe's, but the ball is crossed back in and bounces to Evanilson, who smashes the ball past Mignolet to put Porto 2-0 ahead!!!
R. Onyedika
Yellow Card
Club Brugge
56' Uribe brilliantly dispossesses Buchanan before passing forward to Otavio, who is caught in the face by Onyedika. The Brugge midfielder protests his innocence, but he's booked by the referee regardless.
L. Sylla
Yellow Card
Club Brugge
54' Sylla blocks off the run of Evanilson in behind him, but the rather tame foul warrants a yellow card due to the Brugge defender handling the ball on its way through.
53' After a Buchanan run into the box is repelled by Porto, Evanilson looks to come away with the ball, but is scythed down on the right by Onyedika, stopping the counter-attack there and then!
N. Lang
Penalty Miss
Club Brugge
51' Lang looked to make up for Vanaken's miss seconds earlier, but the brilliance of Costa in the Porto goal denied them both!
Diogo Costa
Penalty Save
Porto
51' SAVED AGAIN!!! This time it's Lang's turn, who looks to place the ball in the opposite corner, but Costa makes another fantastic save to keep the ball out and keep the score 1-0 to Porto!
51' The referee's not happy yet with that save, and after speaking with his other officials, rules that Costa had encroached before the shot and so the spot-kick will be re-taken!
Penalty Save
50' SAVED!!! Vanaken steps up and looks to smash his penalty low, but Costa anticipates where the ball is going and parries it wide of the opposite post!
David Carmo
Yellow Card
Porto
49' Carmo is booked for the challenge, which was completely unnecessary given his side are defending such a slender lead!
49' PENALTY!!! He's given it!!! On closer inspection, the referee sees that Carmo kicked out at Mechele in the box, so Brugge will get no better chance to equalise than this Vanaken effort from the spot!
48' We're off to VAR to check for a possible penalty surrounding that Mechele incident, and what verdict will the referee take here?
47' A second consecutive Brugge corner, this time delivered by Lang, is punched clear by Costa, but Mechele picks up a knock in the box and spends a fair while on the ground, before regaining his feet.
46' Skov Olsen races down the right, with Lang and Jutgla both arriving in the middle. He avoids the early cross through, and looks to pull one back from the byline before a deflection off Sanusi forces a corner.
46' The sole goalscorer so far gets this game back underway, as Taremi kicks off for Porto!
The teams are back out for the second half, and can the group-leading hosts wrestle back control in this game?
Porto captain Otavio has been everywhere for the Dragoes, and has been their standout performer so far despite picking up a yellow card. He assisted Taremi's goal, one of four chances created, and completed 67 per cent of his passes in the final third, as well as crossing twice. He also contested 12 duels, five of which came in the air, and these game-leading numbers were complimented by four final third entries. Activio.
The half-time whistle blows, with hosts Brugge in the unfamiliar situation of being behind at half-time in Europe! Their first goal conceded in five group games had certainly been coming though, with a series of saves and blocks denying Porto early on, including a block by their own player Evanilson preventing Galeno from scoring. However, when Michele went wandering out of defence, Porto capitalised, with Taremi racing into the space behind him to slot home the opener. It's been a first-half played at a furiously high tempo, and we can only hope for more of the same in the second!
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: CLUB BRUGGE 0-1 PORTO.
45' + 2' CHANCE!!! Lang picks out Skov Olsen on the fly with a diagonal pass down the right wing, but the recipient's cut-back into the box is hooked away by Carmo!
45' + 1' Galeno soars over Odoi as the ball comes his way, but lands awkwardly on his back and is momentarily taken off the pitch for treatment.
45' We'll play two minutes of added time to close out this action-packed first half.
44' Otavio forces Buchanan to head the ball towards the edge of his own box, and Galeno leaves it for Taremi to shoot, but the goalscorer can only collide with Odoi as he looks to shield the ball!
43' Lang crosses into the box twice in quick succession - the first, aimed for Jutgla, is headed away by Carmo, while the second to Skov Olsen sees the winger cut the ball back inside before being dispossessed by Sanusi!
Otávio
Yellow Card
Porto
42' Buchanan looks to twist and sprint away from Otavio down the left flank, and is almost successful before being felled by a sliding challenge from the Porto captain. It was mistimed and got none of the ball, so Otavio is booked.
40' Lang cuts inside from the left and curls the ball across the face of goal, but it's just a touch in front of Vanaken and goes behind for a goal kick.
38' Otavio's long ball from the back is chased by Galeno, but Odoi shows good anticipation to control the aerial ball and put it back to Mignolet.
37' Lang looks to pick out the diagonal run of Jutgla into the Porto box, but his arcing drilled pass is quickly snapped up by the goalkeeper Costa.
35' Taremi has now scored thrice and assisted twice in his last three Champions League appearances, more than he had in his first 13 games in the competition overall.
Otávio
Assist
Porto
33' Otavio's awareness there was superb, nipping in front of Onyedika to steal the ball, and putting it exactly in the space vacated by Mechele, where Taremi was waiting to pounce.
M. Taremi
Goal
Porto
33' GOOOOOAAAALLLL!!!! Porto take the lead!!! A poor pass out from the back by Mechele is seized upon by Otavio, who puts Taremi into the gap through the middle, and the Iranian finishes coolly to curl the ball into the bottom corner!!! A clinical finish to say the least, but one coming from a Brugge error, and the hosts' perfect defence is finally breached to make it 1-0 to the visitors!
31' Porto clear from the corner and Galeno chases the loose ball, smashing into Odoi and conceding a free-kick on halfway.
30' Odoi floats a teasing pass in behind the defence which Lang is bursting onto, but it's put behind by Cardoso for a corner, Brugge's first of this game.
S. Eustáquio
Yellow Card
Porto
29' Eustaquio is back to his feet and running freely again, but he's not quick enough to keep up with Skov Olsen as the Brugge winger runs around the outside of him. He's pulled back by his shirt, and the offender Eustaquio is booked.
D. Odoi
Yellow Card
Club Brugge
28' Odoi contests a bouncing loose ball with Eustaquio, but catches the midfielder extremely late and is shown an immediate yellow card. That could've been a nasty one where both parties are concerned.
27' Following back-to-back wins against Bayer Leverkusen, Porto could win three consecutive games without conceding a goal in the Champions League for only the third time. One of those previous instances also came under current coach Sergio Conceicao, between October and November 2020.
25' CHANCE!!! How have Porto not scored there!!! Galeno shows great strength and skill to keep the ball on the edge of the area before feeding Otavio, who floats it into the box. Taremi's cushioned header falls for Galeno to shoot, but his goalbound half-volley hits Evanilson on the way through and bounces wide for a goal-kick!
23' Skov Olsen's crosses floats over everyone's heads before Buchanan picks the ball up on the opposite flank, and the Canadian cuts inside from the left before having a shot blocked by Pepe!
21' Eustaquio puts Galeno through a gap down the left and the Brazilian sprints through it, cutting the ball back from inside the box before it's put behind for a corner by Nielsen!
20' After that comedy of defensive errors a few minutes ago, neutrals would indeed be scratching their heads as to how Brugge haven't conceded a Champions League goal yet, but Mechele shows his composure to intercept a threatening Sanusi cross after Galeno did well to create space down the left.
18' Onyedika sees a volleyed effort skew away from goal, but the hosts recycle possession and Skov Olsen whips a cross into the box. Costa climbs high to punch it away, and this game is running along with absolutely zero brakes at the moment!
16' OVER!!! A mix-up at the back gives three Porto players attacking space to run into, and Taremi bears down on goal with the ball. Mignolet rushes out to close the gap, but the Iranian doesn't test him, firing a shot over the bar that looked easier to score than miss!
15' OVER!!! The ball's bouncing in the box again after Carmo heads the corner towards goal. It bounces in front of Taremi, who smashes a shot into the ground and over the bar!
15' CHANCE!!! Panic stations in the Brugge box, after Otavio's skewed shot is headed forward by Uribe. Mignolet comes for the ball, but it ricochets off Odoi, and Taremi follows in to turn the ball goalwards. He's unsuccessful, and Odoi is forced into a rushed clearance, which flies behind the goal for a Porto corner!
14' Club Brugge are the only team yet to concede a goal in the Champions League this season. This is despite the Belgian side facing 70 shots across their four matches, with only Rangers (85), Shakhtar Donetsk (82) and Viktoria Plzen (75) facing more than them through the first four matchdays. Resolute.
12' Sanusi's long throw into the box is flicked on by Taremi, and it's only half-cleared by the Brugge defenders, forcing Mignolet to come out and punch the ball away!
10' Otavio tries to catch the home defence unawares with a quick free-kick passed into the box, but Onyedika isn't fooled and shepherds the ball back to Mignolet, who collects it.
9' Club Brugge have only lost one of their six previous games when hosting a Portuguese side in European competition, winning three, however that defeat did come in the most recent such fixture – 2-1 against Porto in October 2016.
7' OVER!!! A clever flick from Otavio clips the ball over the top for Eustaquio in the box, and the midfielder snatches at a left-footed shot which beats Mignolet and just clears the crossbar!
6' Otavio's corner is met by Cardoso, but it's a weak header from the defender that Mignolet can easily collect.
5' Galeno and Odoi tussle for the ball down the left, and the Brugge defender can't prevent an early Porto corner.
4' Onyedika goes up to contest an aerial ball with Otavio, but comes off second best and requires treatment after landing with an almighty thump.
3' None of the five European encounters between Brugge and Porto have ended as a draw, with Brugge winning two and Porto winning three. Brugge won the most recent, 4-0 on matchday two of this season’s Champions League.
1' Jutgla kicks off for the hosts, and we are off and running in Northern Belgium!
The two sets of players head out onto the pitch, and we're nearly ready to get underway at the Jan Breydel Stadium!
Wenderson Galeno scored in both the 2-0 and 3-0 wins over Bayer Leverkusen, and starts down the left blank for the visitors. Top scorer Mehdi Taremi also netted twice from the spot in the latter victory, and is half of a front two also featuring Galeno’s fellow Brazilian, Evanilson.
Ferran Jutgla has scored eight goals so far this season for the Belgian side, including two in the Champions League, and starts through the middle of their three-man attack, flanked by Noa Lang and second-top scorer Andreas Skov Olsen to his left and right.

Porto have recovered from that home drubbing to beat bottom side Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 and 3-0 in their two respective fixtures since, and as a result the Dragoes sit second, two points ahead of third-placed Atletico Madrid.
Having been eliminated at this stage of the competition last season, Brugge have taken charge of their Champions League campaign this time around, and are top of Group B by four points. The Boeren are yet to lose or concede a goal after four group games, and smashed their upcoming opponents 4-0 in Porto on matchday two.
