Nigeria v Burundi: Five Swallows to watch out for

4:49 PM MYT 22/06/2019
Burundi v Harambee Stars Kenya.
Which Burundi players will pose the biggest threat to Nigeria on Saturday at Afcon?

  • Saido Berahino Stoke City 2018-19

    #1 Saido Berahino

The ex-Stoke man has endured a turbulent career, undermined by his choices at every turn. However, the decision to represent the country of his birth seems to have given him a new lease on life, and he now leads the side as captain.

Burundi will look to him for quality in the final third, especially creatively, where his movement and composure mean he can trouble the opposing backline and ask questions. He scored once in qualifying, and assisted the equalizer in a recent friendly against Tunisia.

  • Bloemfontein Celtic, Fiston Abdul Razak

    #2 Fiston Abdul Razak

Only Odion Ighalo scored more goals in qualifying than JS Kabylie's Abdul Razak. A forward who is keen to leave one on his marker early on; he is a willing presser and a tireless runner in attack.

In spite of his goal tally, perhaps his greatest utility for Burundi will come in his link-up play and his one-touch hold-up. That said, given the chance, he is more than capable of punishing any defence.

  • Cedric Amissi

    #3 Cedric Amissi

The winger has a habit of scoring important goals: in the qualifying series, he opened Burundi's account, and on the last day he was once again on hand to score the goal that qualified the East African side.

A technical player who scores in eye-catching fashion, Amissi can play on either flank and is alive to his defensive responsibilities going the other way. He will be one to watch for the Nigeria full-backs.

  • Hussein Shabani

    #4 Hussein Shabani

The versatile attacking midfielder is not nailed on to start for Burundi, but if he does, he can give an added dimension to Olivier Niyungeko's side in terms of guile.

Whereas the side is largely functional, Shabani brings the ability to link midfield and attack, whether playing centrally or out wide, where he is wont to drift inside and combine with Berahino between the lines.
