The teenager opened his senior national team account with the opener against his nation's biggest rivals

Tyler Adams picked a good time to open his United States national team account.

The 19-year-old New York Red Bulls midfielder scored his first senior international goal in the second half to give the USMNT a 1-0 victory over Mexico.

Moments before, El Tri had been reduced to 10 men after Angel Zaldivar was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Wil Trapp.

Mexico had generated more of the threatening chances prior to that point, but following the red card, the USMNT gained a foothold into the game.

Four minutes after the card, second-half substitute Antonee Robinson delivered a low cross into the area that evaded multiple Mexico defenders. Adams made a run from deep and was able get onto the ball in the center of the area, and slot home the finish to open up the scoring.

It was the culmination of a sudden sea change of action that started a few minutes earlier in the second half.

USMNT defender Matt Miazga clashed with teenager Diego Lainez, which brought both teams together, though no one was sent off for that incident.

However, tempers seemed to boil over as Zaldivar would soon haul Trapp down near midfield to earn the straight red.

Minutes later, Adams would find the breakthrough that proved the difference in the victory.
