VIDEO: How Diego Godin was named UEFA Champions League Player of the Week, presented by Santander

Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin has been named the UEFA Champions League Player of the Week, presented by Santander.

The Uruguay international put in yet another leading performance at the heart of the toughest defence in the competition, capping his sensational showing with what could prove an all-important second goal in his side’s 2-0 over Juventus.

Godin, who is hoping to lead Atleti to a final that will be played at their very own Wanda Metropolitano in the Spanish capital, beat off stiff competition to take the prize on a week that saw a number of outstanding individual showings.

Raheem Sterling’s late winner for Manchester City in their thrilling 3-2 victory at Schalke had the England international in line for the prize, as did Jason Denayer’s sensational defensive performance for Lyon against Barcelona.

Bayern Munich’s Thiago rounded off the nominations following a midfield masterclass at Anfield as the German giants returned home with a goalless draw in their first leg against Liverpool.
