UEFA Champions League - Road to Madrid: Liverpool's Matchday 3 & 4

A sixth UEFA Champions League crown is in the sights for Liverpool who have reached the final of the competition for the second year in a row.

However, fellow Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur stand between the Reds and a sixth European crown with Madrid set to play host to the all-English final.

As Liverpool get ready for their biggest test of the season, we take a look back at their matchday three and four displays on the road to Madrid.

MATCHDAY 3

Liverpool 4-0 Crvena Zvezda

Having beaten PSG before going down to Napoli in their second group-stage clash, Liverpool were looking to get back to winning ways against Serbian side Crvena Zvezda (formerly Red Star Belgrade).

It turned out to be a dominant display from the Reds at Anfield with Roberto Firmino firing them ahead in the 20th minute with a deflected strike. The hosts added a second right at the stroke of the half-time whistle with Mohamed Salah grabbing the goal. The Egyptian superstar added a second via the penalty spot just minutes into the second-half to all but seal thee points for Liverpool.

Sadio Mane added the icing on the cake in the 80th minute after his initial spot-kick had been saved.

MATCHDAY 4

Crvena Zvedza 2-0 Liverpool

Just when Liverpool thought they were back in the mix in their group of death, they were brought crashing down to the ground by the Serbian giants in the reverse fixture.

A spectacular header and voley from Milan Pavkok in the 22nd and 29th minutes respectively fired the hosts into first-half supremacy and it proved to be a mountain too high for Liverpool to scale in the end.

Despite dominating the ball, Liverpool failed to find a reply with Daniel Sturridge spurning down a great opportunity. It was the Serbian side’s first ever group-stage win in the Champions League.
