The Australian defender has been given an early release with Wellington's A-League 2016-17 season all but over

Wellington Phoenix have agreed to release Jacob Tratt from the rest of his one-year contract so the full-back can return home to New South Wales for "personal and family reasons".

Just days after agreeing to an early termination for striker Shane Smeltz, who joined Indonesian club Pusamania Borneo FC, the Phoenix announced that Tratt has been allowed to travel to Australia ahead of the club's final game of the 2016-17 A-League season.

Tratt, 22, was a revelation for Wellington this term, starting 20 of 26 matches in his debut season in New Zealand after signing a one-year deal in September.

"We are disappointed to lose Jacob because he had done so well since joining the club but in the circumstances it was the right thing to do," Phoenix coach Des Buckingham said in a statement.

"From the moment he arrived he progressed quickly and it is a pity that it didn't work out for him."

Tratt joined Wellington from NPL NSW club Sydney United 58 having previously been involved with Sydney FC's youth side from 2013 to 2016.

He made his A-League debut in Round 1 against Melbourne City and became a regular at right-back for the Phoenix.
