Sunday Adetunji hopes for another impressive season with Abia Warriors

Abia Warriors’ Sunday Adetunji has reaffirmed his determined zeal to carry on from where he stopped last season after he scored once in his club’s 2-1 win over FC Ifeanyi Ubah in a friendly game played at the Neros Sports Stadium, Nanka on Friday.

Adetunji didn’t start last season well as he was only making a return to football after spending over six months on the sidelines due to an arm injury he sustained before the end of the previous season but he had a commendable second round of the season while on loan at Enyimba whom he featured for in the Caf Confederation Cup.

After returning to Abia Warriors at the end of his loan spell with Enyimba which lasted for just three months, Adetunji scored his first goal of the pre-season activities with the Umuahia side on Friday when he converted from 12 yards against FC Ifeanyi Ubah and he disclosed that he is doing his best to do better than he performed last season.

He said it was difficult for him forgetting about that happened two seasons ago in Makurdi when he landed awkwardly on his arm in his attempt to score his second goal of the game and his club’s fourth goal in their 4-2 away win against Lobi Stars especially in the first round of the league season but that the temporary change of environment to Enyimba helped him to regain his confidence level back.

“I got a goal against FC Ifeanyi Ubah and it was the best way to start the pre-season for me,” Adetunji told Goal.

“I just resumed for the pre-season few weeks ago after I was granted extended break because of my participation in the Caf Confederation Cup with Enyimba till October. It was the experience with Enyimba that actually made me forget about what happened to me two seasons ago in Makurdi. It was a horrible experience when I got injured at a time I was in the best form of my life. It was hard staging a comeback and when I did I was a little careful because I still had the whole drama coming back to my head.

“I think it was my brief period with Enyimba that made me rediscover myself. I began to enjoy my game again and I forgot about the injury nightmare. I knew I would only be staying with Enyimba for the remainder of last season and I can say that I enjoyed every bit of my stay there.”

The former Shooting Stars and El Kanemi Warriors attacker says he is looking forward to another exciting season where he is hoping to return to the form that made him the highest scorer for Abia Warriors and the previous clubs he played for in the coming season.

“I can only say that I am back to my best and I want to have an explosive season with Abia Warriors,” he continued.

“I have overcome my difficult times and I am eager to reclaim my best form again. This is just the beginning for me and I am going to sustain it. It is my desire for Abia Warriors to finish higher than they did last season.”

Chisom David had shot the Anambra Warriors ahead before Adetunji restored parity from the penalty spot while substitute, Kola Raimi scored the winning goal after a good assist from Amos Ogbuagu.

Adetunji lined up for the Warriors again on Saturday morning when they narrowly lost 1-0 to Delta Force in another test game played at the Neros Sports Complex, Nanka where they are currently having their closed camping exercise.
