Smalling unfazed by Mina, Maguire & Alderweireld talk as he targets Man Utd stay

Chris Smalling intends to be part of Manchester United’s future despite seeing the club heavily linked with the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Yerry Mina.

Jose Mourinho is back in the market for centre-half additions having brought in Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof during the last two summers.

Big money is set to be spent in pursuit of further fresh faces, with the Red Devils looking to land a proven performer who can slot straight into the Old Trafford fold.

New arrivals could nudge Smalling out of contention for a starting berth, with the 28-year-old already being linked with ambitious Premier League new boys Wolves, but the England international is planning to stay put.

He told MUTV: “It does feel like I’ve been here quite a few years but it doesn’t feel that many.

“It’s crazy, if you sit down and think about where it all started and certain games and how the process has gone, it’s pretty crazy.

“I’m just relishing living in this moment and, hopefully, I can look back and be very satisfied [in years to come].

“Hopefully, there’s lots more to come, but it’s nice to have a contribution and to be here for quite a while, helping the team and the managers that have come.

“I just try to do my best and try to be a part of the team. That’s something I’ve really felt at this club.”

Smalling has made 289 appearances for United since signing from Fulham in January 2010.

He has won eight major honours during his time with the Red Devils, including two Premier League titles, and is about to get back on the trophy trail as Jose Mourinho’s side prepare to open their 2018-19 campaign at home to Leicester on Friday.

“I think it [the start of the season] does come round very quickly. But that’s Manchester United,” added Smalling.

“We’re often the most talked about, and why not let us set the tone for the season and hopefully just get that win and set a marker?”

Prior to facing the Foxes, United will take in a final friendly fixture against Bayern Munich on Sunday.
