Has Serie A finally announced its return among Europe's truly elite leagues?

Roma's win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday, on the back of Edin Dzeko's goal and a defence that refused to be broken, saw the Italian top flight place a second team in the Champions League last eight for the first time in over a decade.

Following a 2-1 loss to the Ukrainian side in the first leg, Dzeko's strike pushed Roma through on away goals, with Juventus having also booked a place in the quarter-finals thanks to a win over Tottenham in the last-16.

Not since the 2006-07 season had Serie A placed two teams in the final eight, with AC Milan going on to win the competition that season.

It was a special night for Dzeko as well.

The Bosnian forward netted his first Champions League knockout goal and matched his best output in the competition since the 2009-10 campaign with four goals in total.

The former Manchester City striker has been crucial during Roma's run, with direct involvement in six (four goals, two assists) of the team's 11 goals in the competition so far.

Roma also relied on a defence that has been nearly impossible to break down at the Stadio Olimpico.

Tuesday's result was the fourth time in the last four Champions League home fixtures that Eusebio Di Francesco's side kept a clean sheet, and it was needed, as even one goal on Tuesday would have seen Shakhtar advance.

The back line was particularly on point for the second-leg clash, not allowing a shot on target throughout the night. It was the first time since the 2004-05 season that Roma held a Champions League opponent without a shot on goal.

Roma must wait a few days to find out who they will face in the quarter-finals, with the draw set to take place on Friday.
