'Scary' Chelsea are the pick of Premier League title challengers, says Souness

The ex-Scotland midfielder considers the Blues to be serious contenders, but admits that he is hoping to see Liverpool battle for more than a top-four finish

Chelsea are looking ‘scary’ in their pursuit of the Premier League title, according to Graeme Souness.

The Blues made it seven wins in a row on Saturday as they edged out London rivals Tottenham 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

'Spurs squad stronger than Chelsea's'

That contest saw Antonio Conte’s side concede for the first time during their sequence of victories, while taking their tally at the opposite end of the field to 29 in 13 games.

Only Liverpool can better that record, but Chelsea have one more point on the board than the men from Merseyside.

Jurgen Klopp is also preparing himself for a lengthy spell without the services of key creative influence Philippe Countinho, with the Brazilian having damaged knee ligaments over the weekend against Sunderland.

Souness admits the Reds will be disappointed to lose a key man at a crucial stage of the season, but hopes they can challenge for more than merely a top-four finish and push in-form Chelsea and the rest of the title hopefuls close in the battle for domestic dominance.

He told Sky Sports: "Of course it's [Coutinho injury] a blow. But I was captain there and regarded as one of the better players and I was out for 10 games and they won every single one of them!

Coutinho's message to Reds fans

"At the start of the season I would have signed up for finishing in the top four, but now I'm looking for a wee bit more.

"But we're not even in December. One year at Liverpool we lost to Manchester City on Boxing Day and were 12th in the league, everyone was writing us off and we still won it.

"So to start picking a winner now is really hard. But of the candidates, Chelsea look scary to me.

"They don't have to have all of the ball to win games. Liverpool do, Manchester City do, Arsenal do. Chelsea play in a pragmatic way, they are hard to beat.

"They all seem to know what they are doing now and Diego Costa and Eden Hazard are a real threat. But it could change dramatically in the next month."

Hazard snubs Arsenal & United for title

If Chelsea are to falter, then Souness hopes Liverpool will be ready to pounce, with Klopp the ideal candidate to lead a title-starved side towards an ultimate goal.

He said: "I think he's the perfect fit for that club.

"He's a man who wears his heart on his sleeve and he's at a very emotional football club. I think it's working beautifully right now."
