Saudi Pro League: Al Ahli late winner lights up title race

Al Ahli managed to overturn a 2-0 scoreline against Al Shabab to win 3-2 and stay within 2 points of Al Hilal at the top of the table and light up the title race. The way Al Ahli won was a testament to their character which showed throughout the match and sent fans all around the nation into a frenzy.

Al Shabab opened the scoring in the 12th minute via Mohammed Benyettou and followed up with another just 2 minutes later thanks to Hattan Bahbery’s shot from outside the box. Ioannis Fetfatzidis managed to lessen the deficit before half time with a penalty in the 40th minute.

Al Ahli kept on fighting throughout the second half and new signing Momen Zakaria managed to score the equalizer in the 87th minute to spur the Greens on before a low cross sent in by Saeed Al Mowallad was tapped in by Mohanad Aseri in the 95th minute to win the game in extraordinary fashion.

Elsewhere, league leaders Al Hilal managed to overcome a poor first half to beat Al Raed 2-1 thanks to goals from Mojahed Al Manea and Gelmin Rivas.

Their derby rivals Al Nassr lost to Al Taawoun 1-0 despite their new-look squad, while Al Ittihad grabbed a lucky win against Ohod to move into 5th place on level with Al Nassr.

The surprise package of the season, Al Faisaly, drew 2-2 with the resurgent Al Fayha under the management of Gustavo Costas. The former sit in 3rd place with 30 points, ahead of 4th placed Al Nassr by 3 points.
