PSG's Cavani pulls ahead of Messi as top club scorer in 2017

Edinson Cavani is now the top scorer in Europe's biggest five leagues in 2017 after reaching 50 goals for Paris Saint-Germain.

The Uruguayan has enjoyed a year to remember, keeping up his form in front of the net even after the signings of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe heightened competition in the PSG attack.

And it was no surprise to see his name on the score-sheet again as he opened the scoring for his club against Caen on Wednesday.

That strike brought up his half-century in all competitions for PSG, and also put him in the lead as the year's most prolific scorer.

With 50 Cavani sits one goal ahead of Lionel Messi, while Robert Lewandowski completes the podium with 44 goals in 2017 for Bayern Munich.

Messi, however, will have the chance to take the crown for himself should he score more than once against Real Madrid in Barcelona's final game of the year.

Tottenham's Harry Kane can also add to his tally of 43 before the year is out, as can Cristiano Ronaldo, currently in fifth with 42 and gearing up for Saturday's Clasico.

Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ciro Immobile of Napoli, Monaco's Falcao and Serie A duo Dries Mertens (Napoli) and Edin Dzeko (Roma) complete 2017's top 10.
