The top-flight debutants were held to a 1-1 draw by the lower league side in a test game on Wednesday evening at the Kris Dera Hotel Stadium, Omoku after a late equaliser by the Seasiders.
In his post-match analysis, Elechi pointed out that his players should have done better with the other opportunities they had in the tie after Adeseun Adelani’s early minute opener.
He said they must improve in their forthcoming friendly matches slated if they are serious about surviving the relegation zone at the end of the season.
“It was a game my players played very well but just like in previous matches, we were unable to convert the chances that came our way,” Elechi told Goal.
“It was a game we should have wrapped up especially in the first half after Adelani’s goal but we were wasteful before we allowed them to stage a comeback in the dying minute of the game. I have pointed out to them areas they must improve.
“We shall concentrate solely on these areas during our training sessions from Thursday. We want to build a team that will be ready for the league restart when we are recalled. We want to do everything possible to regain our top-flight status.
“For that to be possible, we must start converting our chances better than we are doing now. We can’t just be dominating ball possessions without translating that into goals. We have the potential to remain in the premier league.”
The tactician, however, confirmed that their proposed friendly match with Akwa United has been put off due to some logistics reasons but that they are considering other options to make the team busy before the league continuation.
“It is unfortunate that our friendly game with Akwa United can’t go ahead again. We had it in our programmes but we had to take it that way,” he continued.
“I will say it was logistics reasons because the game should have gone ahead last weekend had everything worked well. We have other options we are reviewing. The major issue is that we want to keep our players busy with friendly games.
“We are looking at offers from other lower league clubs that will like to face our team. We will play as many friendly matches as possible because the league organisers may decide to call off the break at any time.”
